For those that do smoke (and desire to quit), I know that many people have found the following site very helpful.

WhyQuit - Quit Smoking Cold Turkey

The site contains a number of informative links on quitting smoking - for good. It dispells a lot of the myths of quitting "cold turkey" and also provides information on the benefits of quitting without using nicotine replacement. The site also has a forum area where members offer support for others who have or are trying to quit.

The Real Cost of Smoking

Quit Smoking Tip Sheet

Stop Smoking Recovery Time Table

Hope these links help someone!

The Church, that I know of, has no official stance on tobacco smoking.
I admit... I smoke. If I ever quit, which I do say I will eventually, it will be for health reasons, not for theological ones. I try not to smoke during lent, & it's a matter of control, & getting rid of extra stuff, like tv, etc. As far as defiling the body... I think it's just as harmful to sit in front of a computer all day posting on Orthodox forums & not getting proper excersize because of it, as it is to smoke 4 or 5 cigs a day. Please note that I would never encourage someone to smoke, as I admit it's a waste of money. Anyway, must run...

My main problem with smoking is that I use it a way of avoiding pain or as a comfort, which is pretty stupid because, as Saint Maximus says (from memory) "if you still have evil habits, expect constant trials."

It was my pleasure to provide the links! I hope that you had a chance to really give the site a good browsing I will be sure to pray for you and your quit.

Plus, when it comes down to it - isn't this the truth?!?!

Think also about all of the money you will be $aving and all the great things you could do with all the cash that you will have saved!!

With the cash that is saved you could buy something nice for yourself so that every time you look at it, you will remember what that money could have been spent on and it will also remind you of your great accomplishment! Or perhaps you might want to make a charitable donation, etc.

Again I wish you all the best with your quit and I will remember you in prayer. Once you put your mind to it and set your focus on all the great things that will come from your quitting, you won't ever want to look back!

God bless!

In Christ,
Aaron

My dear departed mother used to say: "Any act which cannot commence with a prayer should not be commenced." I would say smoking is one of them.
