Makis,

Practically all churches in Greece have pews, and most cathedral churches have choirs (because in my opinion a protopsaltis with a group of psaltades is a choir).

I have never seen a church anywhere in Greece, save for the Roman Catholic temple in Athens, that had pews. They all have chairs and/or stalls, but never pews. You must be confusing the two. :)

And I don't know if you have ever heard a Greek choir in America, but they are nothing at all like a psaltis or a group of psaltadas. They wear protestant robes and sing to the tune of an Organ in a choir loft. You might think you were a Southern Baptist. :)

As far as spaceships...http://www.dgunning.org/architecture/Wisc/annun.htm :):)

From what I can gather, you have never been significantly exposed to the Greek "churches" in America. You have no idea what the "Patriarch" has done here. What I have explained in just the tip of the iceberg.

Your assesment on the Phanar is fair enough.

Tell me, what is the mood in Greece with regards to this issue.

Wow, I have read a few books on Frank Lloyd Wright and I never knew that he designed a Greek Orthodox Church.
It is just so strange to think that a Greek Orthodox group requested the church to be built in this manner. I mean, who came up with the idea to ask FLW to merge an american arts & crafts style with the Byzantine!? Does anyone have any history on this?

What an amazing church! I do see FLW's genius here. Byzantine dome (near authentic original color to Ayia Sofia's original lead one), exterior walls' appearence or finish just like the Church of the Holy Wisdom, and it's even in a cross shape. Amazing. A pretty building. Of course, I do prefer more traditional architecture, but still...and it's Who is within it that counts anyway.

BTW, I remember no pews in Greece.

I have to politely disagree with you. That as got to be one of the ugliest things Mr. Wright ever designed. I love most of his residential architecture, but his relgious stuff is just bad. He did some work for Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida, and the chapel there is just odd too.

I also hate to see Orthodox churches that don't look 'orthodox'. Both of the GOA churches here in the Twin Cities are just hidious looking. One is in the shape of the cross and both have gold domes, but that's their only saving grace. One of these (if not both) were 'purpose built', in other words they are not a old baptist churches adapted for orthodox use. These just are not beautiful buildings in way, shape, or form.

I appreciate your "polite" disagreement. Opinions do differ. I said it was pretty, not that I liked it as a church. The architectural elements of a Byzantine (not Slavic) church are pronounced, even overdone in this church.
What's with "looking Orthodox"? "Being" Orthodox , I'll buy that...

I seem to recall a radio show on NPR that was describing the 1950's fascination with space, space civilizations, and future utopian societies and their gadgetry. I think this "spaceship", clearly refects 1950's social dispositions; not Orthodox tradition.

And I say this because FLW, in his time, was known as a progressive modernist in his architectural style. By merely going to him, you knew you were paying a premium for these innovations.

Therefore, I don't fault FLW at all. Its just another example of the lost Orthodox mindset of the people who approached him.
