The TV and DVD part is funny. I am glad I'm not the only one who, with good hopes, has given up my DVD only to have another one appear later. My wife loves spending time together watching movies and having family movie night, which isn't all bad.

Fortunately, my wife and I agree that we do not want our children in daycare and we have made sacrifices for her to stay at home. We also agree that we will homeschool our children.

I cannot live as simply as I would like, but I guess in my own way I'm trying to make sacrifices and follow Christ. I ...

Maybe there is wisdom for this that none of us understand . . . I would guess that monasticism is not very compatible with American culture. That's not to say we shouldn't establish monasteries, but I am sure there would be clashes, many misunderstadings, and distrust of monastics here, such as the ...

Both my Antiochian priest and the Greek priest in my city wear the Roman collar. The only time I saw my priest in a cassock was once when the bishop was in town.

That is basically what I have heard . . . which seems absolutely dreadful! I actually heard Metropolitan Philip himself had bad experiences in monasteries as a child or something, but I can't substantiate that story.

Does anyone know why the Antiochians, who are the 2nd largest jurisdiction in America, have no monasteries? I am Antiochian and find this reality the second hardest thing for me to grasp about our synod.

If monasticism is the "barometer of Orthodoxy" I'm afraid we are seriously ill.

I have considered that, but the priest in OKC, who I respect highly, would not really encourage that. He accepts the Antiochians as canonical, but I think he realizes the modernist condition of the Antiochians makes that atmosphere unhealthy. I guess I could ask him about irregular attendance.
