300 Ukraine troops attack in Russian Kursk region today, lol. https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2024/08/6/7469205/

Since this is coming from Pravda, it could also be a propaganda psyop of FSB.

Fun fact: when I was living in Russia, the weekend Pravda (the physical paper) included an English insert for international news from... The New York Times.

Thank you for your reply, Byzantophile Theodore. I did keep checking bac, because I did want to know.
I honestly don't know a good website to look at news of this war where I can be sure i'm getting the best info. Thus, I remain unaware of what's going on. I do look at Russia Today sometimes, hoping for news of the war. But that's all. I usually don't have time at the library for that even.

The problem is more, I should specify, fitting the individual news items into a larger picture of how it's going overall. Who is winning ?

I’m not against people looking at Pravda or RT. Truth is the first casualty in war, so it’s just wise to know the allegiances of these outlets and consider that too. It’s currently illegal in Russia to “defame the armed forces”, meaning bad news is basically banned. I just try looking at news from both sides for overlap, but there’s no perfect method.

Russia surpasses Ukraine in numbers of artillery and munitions production. This barrage is taking a toll on the defenders. Russia also seems to have a better control of the airspace. The recruitment crisis seems to have hit Ukraine harder than it hit Russia. Ukraine is under bombardment of her strategic industries (energy sector, munitions factories, repair shops), whereas NATO seems to have banned Ukraine from striking at the industries of Russia. I believe these factors put Ukraine at a serious disadvantage, but Ukraine still has powerful forces in the field - divisions which definitely don’t want to surrender to the Russians. The wild card in this equation is the assistance of NATO to Ukraine. No matter which side wins this war, it will be at a high price. Lord have mercy.

Thank you, ByzantophileTheodore !
I like receiving an overview of the situation at any given time, which you gave.

I have to say I can not bring myself to think of even going to a Pravda website, as I remember that lying news organization ALL TOO WELL from the Soviet days ! Whereas, RT is comparatively new and not tainted by that heavy Communist past.

Why is it that Nato is restraining Ukrainians from attacking the major installations, do you think ? That sounds SO out of character for fiercely anti-Russian Nato.

I don't like to follow milnews much anymore (for my own sake), but from what I can tell, the incursion into Russia does appear to be a legitimate operation done by Ukrainian SOF. Unsurprising as the Russian military has allowed such incursions in the past. From an actual tactical decision, it seems unproductive for the Ukrainian military.

There's an old Soviet era joke about the newspapers "Pravda" and "Izvestia", "There's no news in 'Truth', and there's no truth in 'News'". Also RT is also Communist propaganda. They constantly praise Communism on there.
