Yes, people do tend interpret Fr. Seraphim to suit themselves. [They do the same thing to St. John S&SF and St. Philaret NY.] The cause of this a failure to discern the Royal Path, which Fr. Seraphim DID discern, and he tried his hardest to convey it to others.
Folks who do not discern the Royal Path tend to see it as a middle-ground between two extremes. An example of this middle-ground is the ROCOR-MP going into communion with the OCA. Their thinking is: "We are in communion with a new calendar church, but we ourselves will keep the old calendar." That's not the Royal Path. That's compromise.
To understand Fr. Seraphim and to see him as he really was, we must discern the Royal Path which he was on. The Royal Path is first a sense of the Church Triumphant in heaven. St. John S&SF, St. Philaret NY, Fr. Michael Pomazansky, Archbishop Averky - all taught this by word and/or deed, and Fr. Seraphim was able to grasp it.
The Royal Path is not a mixture of, or place in between, the renovationists and the super-correct. It is above them both. You have to look up to the Church in heaven. The Royal Path neither compromises nor kills the spirit with the letter.
Off the Royal Path the renovationists are trying to create their perfectly customized church on earth, and the super-correct are trying to create their perfectly canonical church on earth. But the perfect Church is only found in heaven. And our hope is to be part of the Heavenly Church in the afterlife. This hope, this striving, is what leads us to the Royal Path.
