Christ is Risen!
Cyprian I think you refer in part to the Evangelicals? However I would venture to say that the majority of serious, traditional and conservative (an often slight but at times very crucial and pronounced difference) religious people focus a great deal on these being the End Times and in their heterodoxy rage against the Church and promote the most vile ideologies that result in the death of thousands or even millions of people. However I am sure this is nothing new to most who visit this site.
What I wanted to comment about to your post was that I believe that for many of us knowledge of the Antichrist leads to becoming Orthodox Christians. By this I am referring to my conversion having been catalyzed by read the book Nihilism
I think that what so astonished me when reading the biography of Fr.Seraphim (Rose) was that it is written that when he finally realized and came to know the Antichrist he could not hide or hold back from seeking and knowing Christ!
Just look at today or tonight really.
It is Walpurgisnacht which has been and is increasingly embrace by wiccans, Norse New Right pagans, and Satanists of all types. The Church of Satan even made this their New Year! Look at the witch gatherings that took place in Germany!
I really do not think it is too hard to see the Antichrist in these times but that it is not always apparent to what extent this spirit has permeated our society and our lives.
One thing is sure that I need to," . . . cut off the facile way of referring to the "apocalyptic" character of the times, and in doing raise in others deep fears and hopes which . . . pronouncements are far from satisfying."
Forgive me for waisting your time!

Christ is Risen!

Helen mentioned something that I think about. That is...we talk about the end of the world, the Second Coming, but the fact is that we can die in the next minute. That will be our judgement to face. It seems like we are being distracted to look so far ahead in time so that we are not prepared for what will happen in the present. We must practice repentance everyday. But, if we focus on the arguements of when the Second Coming will happen, then we neglect our first responsibility to our souls and then we will be unprepared for when the Lord calls our souls.

Focus on repentance and when the time of the end of the world will come, we will be prepared because we have labored for our salvation.

In Christ,

Joanna

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. (Ps. 50)

Well, the Dormition is now almost here, and the attendant lunar eclipse in the western United States. For what it is worth--which may be nothing-- Barack Obama will be formally nominated, and give his acceptance speech, at the Democratic Convention in Denver this Thursday, August 28th.

There is too much supersition here. Nothing is going to happen. People have read-into these kind of events for centuries.

Incognito,

Code: Select all

You seem quite certain about these matters. I confess that I lack such certainty, believing that "no man knoweth the time." For example, does the fact that people have discussed the last times for centuries imply that they will never come to pass? Or that the scriptures are not truly prophetic in some meaningful sense? To what end, then, did St. John dictate the Apocalypse? I don't quite follow your logic. And, incidentally, before proferring an opinion, did you take time to reflect upon the scripture from the Apocalypse referenced eralier on this particular thread?

I don't question Saint John the Theologian and the Apocalypse. I'm just against excessive apocalypticism and / or superstition.

And I of course affirm the fact that we are definatley in the last days. There is no doubt about this at all. But we shouldn't read-into every little thing as a sign of the end times.
