history

Post by Joe Zollars »

I am majoring in just history right now, but when I go for my masters I would like to get it either in Medievel studies, War Between theStates history, or religious history.

but I am planning after I finish up my AA (Assosciate of Arts degree) to get my BA (Bachelor of Arts degree) in secondary education (Highschool level) with an emphasis in history and possibly a secondary emphasis in political theory.

In Christ,

ahhh ok, that sounds interesting :) are you planning on teaching history? i never really liked history class, but the religious history sounds interesting....especially if it's about Orthodoxy :)

yes I would like to teach History. I think it would be a better use of my time than other careers.

Hmm, I wonder if I could specialize in "History of hte Orthodox Church?" Probably not, but something to keep in mind for a thesis.

That would be very cool, Joe. While many Orthodox people in America write about Deification and so forth, very few seem to write books specifically about history. Vladimir Moss and maybe a few others, but most English-speaking Orthodox end up reading history books written by non-Orthodox like Jaroslav Pelikan, Phillip Schaff, Henry Chadwick, J.N.D. Kelly, etc.

Professor Pelikan is Orthodox now. Many of his books(maybe all?) were written before his conversion though. Maybe everyone already knows this? I dunno.

I'm praying for both our back-to-schoolers... or at least those being taught and tested and such :) I hope things go well /\

Bogo,

Maybe not everyone :) I knew, but I find that his books (the older ones, anyway) are more even-handed Protestant than Eastern Orthodox, so I listed him among the Protestants. I think we Orthodox do a regrettable thing when we praise Mr. Pelikan's books to high heaven. I don't doubt his sincerity, or even his learnedness... yet his books were written while he (plainly, it seems to me) had a very ecumenically minded Protestant mindset. I don't say that in a derogatory way, that's just what I've gotten from reading a number of his books (especially his Melody of Theology: A Philosophical Dictionary).
