I don't blame the Pope for being hesitant about giving the icon of Kazan to the ROC.

1) AFAIK, Patriarch Alexey is sitting on countless Catholic churches that were stolen from us by the Soviets. He has not announced plans to return the churches.

Since when is it acceptable to not do good deeds toward others because you are not sure they will reciprocate?

Hi Mor E--

Perhaps you have a point. I was just musing on the overall situation--it's not a one-way street as you know. Perhaps if the Pope took the lead in charity by giving back the icon, Alexey would reciprocate. But maybe the reciprocity is beside the point.

I would like to study the whole issue a little more. It seems that there are many religious artifacts and even monuments that are currently in the "wrong" hands--and it goes both ways. The icon of Our Lady of Kazan is not alone.

I don't think the Pope sees it the way the Russians do, though. The Moscow Patriarchate has played a ruthless political game for many years. People on this café have noted that many times. That has to be taken into account.

Btw, Mor I PM'd you over at the other place. Is tonight still good?

God bless all.

this issue

  1. this Icon is a copy. its not the original deal.

  2. That issue beside the point it is sickening to see it used as a baraning chip, especially with the psuedo-orthodox Moscow "patriarchate"

  3. why give it to Alexy in the first place?! Why not simply take it to the shrine in Kazaan (since it is just a repo, whether they will want it or not might be an issue)

I think it is just crazy how people get worked up over a copy of the original. I xeroxed a page out of a book the other day. I am now going to use that xeroxed copy as a bargaining chip to get a sequel published. come on folks its craziness.

LT, that is because the MP stands for, as pointed out by Paradosis, Misleading Propaganda

In Christ,

True enough.

With all due respect, I am not sure that the people on this board are the most objective in their perspectives on the Moscow Patriarchate. With that said, I generally take a moderate view on this (and other) questions. I don't think the Pope has malicious intent as some Orthodox suppose. On the other hand, why not just give it back? Why the insistence on bringing it back personally, in spite of the fact that they don't want it to happen that way?
