RED AURORAS

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

MORE AURORAS IN THE OFFING: So far, September has been a great month for auroras. A series of solar wind streams, mixed with one or two minor CMEs, has buffeted Earth's magnetic field almost non-stop for the past two weeks. The resulting G1- to G3-class geomagnetic storms have caused displays like this:

Minoru Yoneto took the picture on September 11th from Queenstown, New Zealand

Again, the Milky Way is prominent in this photo. It is the cloud of stars that is a little left to center in the sky.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

Warnings were calling for a Kp6 display last night, Sept 11, and it did come up nicely but wasnt quite the spectacle I had hoped. I went out to Dinosaur Provincial Park in southern Alberta and set up 3 cameras for time-lapse sequences. Here are a few still frames from the evening, including an image of an odd isolated arc in the eastern sky for me (those farther east in Saskatchewan saw it to their west) that stayed stationary but pulsed up and down in brightness, appearing and disappearing in place. In all, it was a beautiful evening amid the badlands on a dark moonless night.

Here is an awesome aurora taken by Truls Tiller on September 14, 2015 from Kattfjordeidet, just outside Tromsø
Notice the purple contrasting with the green.

While this is not a red aurora, it is breathtaking in its beauty. The glory of God is truly manifest in His creation.

SOLAR WIND SPARKS AURORAS: Sometimes, the trick to seeing Northern Lights isn't a great space weather forecast. It's knowing where to find a break in the clouds. "Last night (Sept. 15th), the whole state of Alaska was clouded over," reports Marketa S Murray, "but we know about a few spots between the mountains where sometimes it is clear even when the rest of Alaska is overcast." She raced to one of those spots, and this is what she saw:
