Funny how women are expected to cover their heads, yet men stopped a long time ago (for cultural reasons)the practice of covering their heads as a sign of respect (sigh).

Funny how it is that everyone worries about the public behavior and piety of WOMEN and not mankind in general.

Maybe if we would be more concerned about our own (as in BOTH men and women) spiritual behaviors such arguements would be moot?

It was never a sign of humility for a man to cover his head. It used to be that a what a man wore on his head wa according to his public standing.

I don't think so, Miriam :) I've noticed that even when traditionalist women speak out on issues that effect them as women (e.g., head coverings, modest clothing, etc.) they still get slammed. Modesty and conservatism just ain't cool, I guess.

I think if you study clothing practices from a historical point of view you will find that men did cover their heads but in an effort to separat us from "those nasty Jews" the practice was stopped..... sigh! oy vie!

Homily 26 of St. John the Chrysostom on verse IV of I Corinthians...

Ver. 4. "Every man praying or prophesying having his head covered, dishonoreth his head. But every woman praying or prophesying with her head unveiled. dishonoreth her head."

For there were, as I said, both men who prophesied and women who had this girl at that time, as the daughters of Philip, (Acts chapter 21, verse 9) as others before them and after them: concerning whom also the prophet spake of old: "your sons shall prophesy, and your daughters shall see visions." (Joel chapter 2, verse 28. Acts chapter 2, verse 17)

Well then: the man he compelleth not to be always uncovered, but only when he prays. "For every man," saith he, "praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoreth his head." But the woman he commands to be at all times covered. Wherefore also having said, "Every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head unveiled, dishonoreth her head," he stayed not at this point only, but also proceeded to say, "for it is one and the same thing as if she were shaven." But if to be shaven is always dishonorable, it is plain too that being uncovered is always a reproach. And not even with this only was he content, but added again, saying, "The woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels."...To be covered he then only forbids, when a man is praying; but the wearing long hair he discourages at all times.

END

Men wear no covering because Christ is their Head and they were made in His image and likeness. Women wear a covering because the man is their head and they were made from the flesh of a man. The covering is a sign of the mans authority. The Church teaches that in marriage, the man is like Christ and the woman is like the Church.

I do think TomS does have a point however. It is true that woman covering their head is no longer socially acceptable (as it was only a few years ago and all the ages before that). Today woman, as well as men, are becoming more and more arrogant, vain, and in-human.

Presvitel Reverend Mitrophan Znosko (of blessed memory) used to quote the following when people used to assert the superiority of men. He said that yes he was the head of the family, yet his matushka was the neck and where she turned there he followed......

Anyone who knew Fr. Mitrophan knows that he held his matushka in the highest regard.

Justin:

I glad to someone who has noticed that "little" inconsistancy. I have long thought that womankind's position in the world changed as a result of Christ's teachings. One need only to consider the story of Mary and Martha, the fact that he appeared to women after His Resurrection and that women were His staunchest followers...they ...ahhem...didn't run away :). Yet through out the centuries womankind's place in the world has been consistantly denegraded to the lowest place, a place of submission and no voice of her own. To this day we continue to pay the price for Eve's fall. For us there is no hope of redemption, no possibility to rise above this "fault", ours is just a role of submission. Yet, without women I have often thought that Christianity may not have survived. We are the teachers of the children. We keep the traditions and the faith.

It's sad that we are always "slammed"..... oh, well.... :)
