Some of you are expecting me to become an Orthodox, in order to save my soul – and the sooner the better; Fair enough, that is a normal expectation from good Christians who have the salvation of souls as their ultimate purpose in their life on earth.

However, when one like me, who lives hundreds miles away from any church – remember I live in Australia and the only churches close by are Protestant or Novus Ordo types. So where should I go to receive the sacraments? To Newcastle – 200 km from here – or to Sydney – about 300 km? Because in those cities there are Orthodox churches.

But then again, which Orthodox Church there [in Sydney, Brisbane or wherever], is the true Orthodox Church? You know too well, this is also your problem where you are in the USA – which church is the true Orthodox Church there?

I do recall that you mentioned this difficulty before.
Have you corresponded with Arcmode to see where he attends church?

We are far from an Orthodox Church too, so we have been instructed to attend as often as possible, but when we cannot, then we say extra prayers. In the meantime, we pray daily prayers and chant the Paracleisis to the Virgin Theotokos every evening. The Theotokos has been quick to answer our prayers and help us remain sober in an ungodly unsober world.

Just as the Russians attended catacomb churches and prayed in secret, we are called to do the same. I fear it will not be long before the official True Orthodox churches will be underground catacomb churches since the Holy Bible is considered hate material in many countries due primarily to St. Paul's passages found in Romans, etc.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

I don't know him. I don't know even his real name, if ever has one.

In Australia, there are some true orthodox churches... When far from the church, a solution is to do reader's services: which are services without priest. I am used to doing them; I progressivly acquired the required liturgical material and improved my knowledge of the typikon.

It sounds like you are in New South Wales, Nadir. I am down in Victoria and I go to a church in Melbourne 100 km from where I live.

I will make some inquiries for you Nadir, and see what is close to your area.

Of course I have a real name, I just prefer not to use it online.

Arcmode,

Yes, I am in NSW. However, the closest Orthodox Church in our area, that I know of, is in Newcastle – over two hours drive [one way] from where I live.

What does arcmode stand for? Is it just a made up name or something?
Thanks anyway for your concern.

Jean-Serge,

Thanks for your comment. As for praying at home “when far from the church,” my wife and I have been doing just that for some years now. Incidentally, being Sunday now, we have just finished our Sunday prayers.

Because as air is oxygen for our lungs; prayer is oxygen for our spirit.

I think Arcmode's definition of a True Orthodox Church is good. But we need to supplement it with more concrete guidelines. I suggest the following. A True Orthodox Church must:

  1. Not belong to the World Council of Churches, 2. Must not follow the new calendar, 3. Must accept the ROCOR 1983 anathema against ecumenism, 4. Must accept that sergianism is a schism and/or heresy, 5. Must have apostolic succession from ROCOR or have been in communion with ROCOR before its fall.
