I think that, according to the canons and the Bible, killing in a JUST war (to defend yourself and your people against an attacker) is NOT a sin, but a disqualifyer. St. Athanasius praised killing VICIOUS enemies in battle.

It's not the talking that is the problem....but the seeking of possible punishments. A converstion regarding how to avoid, etc...is beneficial to all. But what kind of punishment is there if I do...is a sin in and of itself....

Sometimes knowing the punishment can deter one from a habitual sin. For instance i know one young man, that among being told by his bishop if he continued in a certain sin he would be excommunicated for one year. Being away from the mysterious struck such fear in his heart that he never sinned in this way ever again. Some can change out of love for God, but others may need other helping words or actions to prevent themselves from sinning in a certain way.

I do not disagree with this. It is very true. My "objection" (for lack of a better word) stemmed from the impression I got from reading the thread that it was not a case of detering but a case of what will I get if I do it.....perhaps I mis-read I don't know, but that was the impression I received.

When I was younger (ahem) my spiritual father used to say...if you have to ask what if, don't do it.... applied to most things in your life, it's a good measuring stick when you think about it.
