Yes, water and drinking (not alcohol) is/was allowed before the 9th hour... If you read Russian, this is the best explanation and description of the fasting rules that I ever could find in an article (try automatic translation with AI if needed). The fasting rules as described in the Typikons.

Thank you for responding and for sending over the link—I really appreciate it; it does seem extremely helpful as a synthesis of the fasting regulations of the Typikon.
