The Sunday of the Dread Judgment

Today is the Sunday of the Dread Judgment, and so it is natural for us to speak of the Dread Judgment and the signs of the end of the world. No one knows that day: only God knows it, but the signs of its approach are given in the Gospels and the Revelations (Apocalypse) of St. John the Theologian. For the most part, Revelations speaks symbolically and cryptically of the events of the end of the world and of the Dread Judgment, but the Holy Fathers have explained them, and there is the pure authentic tradition of the Church that also tells us the signs of the approach of the end of the world and the Dread Judgment. Before the end of life on earth there will be confusion, wars, civil strife, hunger, and earthquakes. People will suffer from fear; their hearts will fail from awaiting disasters. There will be neither spiritual life nor the joy of being alive, but a tortuous state of falling away from life. The falling away will not be from spiritual life only, but also from faith. The Son of Man, when He comes – will He find faith on the earth? People will become proud and ungrateful, refuting the Law of God. Together with a falling away from spiritual life there will also be a diminishing of moral life. Good will be exhausted and evil will grow. It is about this time that the holy Apostle John the Theologian speaks in his divinely-inspired work, the Apocalypse. He himself says that he was “in the spirit” – meaning that the Holy Spirit Itself was in him – when the fate of the Church and the world was revealed to him in various symbols. That is why this is a Divine Revelation. He presents the fate of the Church in the image of a woman who hides in the wilderness during these times. She is not obvious in life. This is happening now in Russia.

In worldly life, those forces preparing for the appearance of the Antichrist will be of primary significance. The Antichrist will be a man, not the devil incarnate. “Anti” is a word meaning “old,” or “instead of,” or “against.” That man will want to exist instead of Christ, to take His place and to have that which is Christ’s. He will want to have the same kind of influence and power over the entire world. Indeed, he will obtain that power before he perishes and the entire world perishes. He will have a helper, a magus, who will do his will through the power of false miracles, and kill those that do not recognize the power of the Antichrist. Before the destruction of the Antichrist, two righteous men will appear to condemn him. The magus will kill them, and for three days their bodies will lie unburied, and the Antichrist and his servants will rejoice to the utmost. Then suddenly these righteous men will be resurrected, and the entire army of the Antichrist will suddenly fall down dead, killed by the force of the Holy Spirit.

But what is known about the person of the Antichrist? His exact origin is unknown. His father is completely unknown and his mother a vile, false virgin. He will be a Jew from the tribe of Dan. The indication of this is that Jacob, when dying, prophesied about the future heirs of his children, and concerning Dan, he said that among his heirs “shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path that biteth the horses’ heels so that his rider shall fall backwards.” This symbolizes that the Antichrist shall act through cleverness and evil. In Revelation, St. John the Theologian speaks of the salvation of the sons of Israel, saying that before the end of the world many Jews will be converted to Christ, but in the list of tribes that are saved, there is no mention of the tribe of Dan. The Antichrist will be very clever and gifted, with a certain ability to deal with people. He will be charming and gentle. The appearance of the Antichrist is already being prepared before his coming: “The mystery doth already work …”

First of all, the forces preparing for his coming fight against lawful monarchical rule. The holy Apostle Paul says that the Antichrist cannot appear until “the one who restraineth” is put aside. John Chrysostom explains that the “one who restraineth” refers to a lawful, pious regime. Such a power struggles with evil. “The mystery” working in the world does not want this, does not want the struggle against evil by the power of a pious ruler – quite the opposite. It wants the rule of lawlessness, and when it achieves this, nothing more will stop the appearance of the Antichrist. He will not only be clever and charming, he will be merciful and do works of charity for the sake of bolstering his control. And when he strengthens his control to the point where the entire world recognizes him, then he will reveal his face. He will choose Jerusalem because it was precisely there that the Saviour revealed His Divine teaching and His Person, and the whole world was called to the blessedness of virtue and salvation. But the world did not accept Christ and crucified Him in Jerusalem, and during the Antichrist’s reign Jerusalem will become the capital of the world that has accepted his rule.

Reaching the summit of power, the Antichrist will demand people acknowledge that he has achieved what no earthly power and no one else has been able to do, and will demand worship of himself as an exalted being – a god. He will do only what pleases people, under the condition that they recognize him as the Supreme Power. He will provide opportunities for Church life, allow her to hold services, and promise that wonderful temples will be built, provided that he be recognized as “Supreme Being” and worshipped. He will have a personal hatred for Christ. He will thrive on this hatred and will rejoice in people’s apostasy from Christ and the Church. There will be a mass falling away from the faith, during which many bishops will betray the faith, and point to the wonderful position of the Church as justification. A search for compromise will be the characteristic state of the people’s faith. Directness of confession will vanish. People will subtly justify their fall, and solicitous evil will support such a general state of mind. People will grow used to apostatizing from the truth and will be accustomed to the sweetness of compromise and sin. The Antichrist will allow people anything as long as they, falling down before him, worship him. This will not be a new attitude toward people: the Roman Caesars were also prepared to grant Christians freedom if they would recognize the emperor’s divinity and supreme divine power. They martyred Christians only because they confessed: “One God do we worship, and Him alone do we serve.” The whole world will be conquered by him, and he will then reveal his hatred for Christ and Christianity.

How will we see? With spiritual sight. Even now, righteous people see at death that which other people around them do not see. The trumpets will sound in souls and consciences. Everything will become clear in the human conscience. The Prophet Daniel, speaking of the Dread Judgment, tells of the Ancient of Days upon His throne, and before Him a river of fire. Fire is a purifying element. Fire burns sin; sin also is burned up by sorrow. If sin has become part of a man, it burns the man himself. Then fire will flare up inside man. Seeing the Cross, some will rejoice and others will fall into despair, confusion, horror. Thus people will be separated instantly. In the Gospel narrative, some stand on the right hand, others on the left hand of the Judge — they are separated by their inner consciousness. The very state of a person’s soul casts him to one or the other side, to the right or to the left. However much more consciously and diligently a person strove toward God in his life, so much the greater his joy when he hears the words: “Come, ye blessed.” And on the other hand, the same words will kindle a fire of horror and suffering in those that did not desire Him, or avoided or fought or mocked Him in their lives. The Dread Judgment knows no witness or court records. Everything is inscribed in the souls of men, and these inscriptions, these “books,” will be opened. Everything will become clear to all and to oneself; the state of a person’s soul sends him to the right or the left. Some will go to the place of rejoicing, others to the place of horror. When the books have been opened it will become clear to all that the root of all transgressions is in a man’s soul. Consider a drunkard or a fornicator: when the body dies, some think the sin, too, has died. No — the inclination to sin was in the soul, and to the soul the sin was sweet. And if the soul has not repented of this sin, has not freed itself of it, it will come to the Dread Judgment with the same desire for the sweetness of sin and “never sate this desire.” There will be the suffering of hatred and wrath in this soul. This is the state of hell. “The fiery Gehenna” – this is the inner fire, the fire of weakness and anger, and here will be the wailing and the gnashing of teeth of powerless wrath.

Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the Kingdom (Luke 12:32)

Thank you, Unseen.Warfare !

I do remember having seen that lost chapter at the time the post was made, and recognizing it myself from early editions. Perhaps from Bishop Savva's biography of St John which volume is rare. I am pretty sure that's where i found that illuminating chapter. I was stupefied to discover it, I remember, because it had never been included in later writings on St John, YET it was SO crucially important !

This was the job of Fr Herman : to pass down ALL the information he gathered about St John Maximovitch, not just selective parts ! After all, he must have been given a divine assignment to be like a journalist, interviewing everyone who had known St John to gather as much truth as humanly possible.
THEN to write it ALL up for posterity !

What she wrote analyzing the deletion was powerful.
Strange that Fr Herman and Platina would have evolved to the point that they considered Rocor a SCHISM, i assume from the MP ! That's a real volte face for them !

Thanks for posting that.

I watched the video too. I guess this selective deletion process has become a syndrome at Platina ? I didn't know about the recent episode. Roll of the eyes !

Thank you for posting the Mystical Meaning of the Tsar's Martyrdom article ! I will return to read it. Has this idea been ALSO shelved by Platina, do you know ?

Well, when I went looking for the missing page I went to the archive to find the issue and at one time you could barrow the later Orthodox Words and that wasn’t an option anymore. I saved it somewhere else thankfully. I’ve read in a few places that Platina isn’t happy about certain lectures and letters being online. I’ve also heard that Fr. Herman had all of St. John’s written works and gave them to the Serbs… Knowing how the MP hated Saint John when he was alive I’m sure his writings won’t see the light of day. Platina released a message to their magazine subscribers that they were discontinuing the OW and focusing on publishing Books. I found a link on the internet archive that says something about them viewing certain work of Fr. Seraphim Rose as being “Dated”. My guess is that means it’s supportive of True Orthodoxy and likely aren’t favorable to the narrative they are pushing. Posting what I have. The second link has a Short Autobiography of Saint John Maximovich written by Fr. Herman and Fr. Seraphim. Just search around that site a little and you’ll find it.

I am looking forward to the Northern Thebaid, Volume 2, myself !

I think the Orthodox Word stopped publication right at that time, since i never received another notice for a forthcoming issue after this announcement. Did anybody else ?

Thanks for reprinting that here so we can refresh our memories.

WHAT ? Why on earth would Fr Herman have given the writings of his mentor to the Serbs ? Was that when Platina went under Bishop Longin ? I think Fr Herman was still residing at Wildwood during that time.
Do you know anything further about this ?
Is there any way to recover them ???
What a treasure trove THAT would be ! A complete set, not partial.
Are you saying the World Orthodox Serbs handed all that important historic material over to the MP ??

How much would you guess that Platina refashioned Fr Seraphim [Rose] to suit their NEW agenda ? Like 50 %, 100 % ?

That is surprising that Platina would call anything by or about their prominent figure as "outdated" - !

I am looking forward to the Short Biography of St John Maximovitch. I will search through that link. I didn't realize these archives even existed.

Thanks for all your work in finding interesting, insightful material.

I’m trying to figure out exactly where I read that Fr. Herman handed that all over to the Serbs… If I’m not mistaken… it was like he was forced to give over all that material. Someone is behind the scenes pulling strings so things don’t get released… it seems he made a deal or someone did. I might have read that on Johanna’s website. That makes sense to me. I’ll try to find it again. Usually I’m pretty good at saving things like this. I know I searched and searched for Fr. Seraphim’s master thesis “Emptiness and Fullness in the Lao Tzu”… I finally found it with the help of Fr. Joseph and the wayback machine so I can’t take all the credit. From just looking around these old websites… They have a lot of material. Their used to be an archive in Santa Rosa

“Copies of Fr. Seraphim’s original letters and journals (including the those quoted in Not of This World, the collection below, and others) are preserved in the archives of the Fr. Seraphim Rose Studies Center (1139 Janero Drive, Santa Rosa, California 95407), and are available for public viewing.“—Fr. Herman

Abbot German Podmoshensky
Publications Collections
Abbot German (Podmoshensky) is the founder and chairman of the Brotherhood of Venerable Herman of Alaska and the president of the Valaam Society of America. In his work "Sacrifice of Holy Russia," he recalls Archimandrite Gerasim (Shmalts). Father Gerasim was predicted long before his birth by Venerable Herman, a monk of Valaam, who labored in Alaska and shone with the light of tabor on his deathbed, becoming the first canonized saint of America. Venerable Herman spoke of a monk who would come to the location of his life on Elov Island in Alaska long after his death, similar to himself, avoiding worldly glory, who would renew the monastic life on Elov Island. Archimandrite Gerasim was a true representative of authentic Orthodox Russia in the virgin forests of Alaska.

He was born on October 28, 1888.

He was not a scholarly monk, but he was a true chosen one of God. Not one who knew faith from books, but who walked experientially towards Christ. For him, communion with the heavenly world in visions was a common occurrence.

In Russia, Father Gerasim labored in the Tikhvin-Kaluga monastery. He came to America in 1915 as a temporary missionary but stayed in Alaska due to the revolution. Amid contemporary jurisdictional disputes, he understood that a Christian must first and foremost follow Christ, who came to save sinners. He did not take sides with any of the warring jurisdictions, being detached from the Moscow Patriarchate, but remained faithful, as he himself said, to the "jurisdiction of Christ," becoming a hermit. And God blessed him to restore a monastic skete in Alaska, found a monastery, and establish, together with St. John of San Francisco and the writer, professor I.M. Kontsevich, the Brotherhood of Venerable Herman of Alaska through the ascetic labors of Fathers Platina Seraphim (Rose) and German (Podmoshensky).

Father Gerasim wept much in his solitude over suffering captive Russia and the apostasy of many Russians who found themselves abroad, straying from the true faith. He was a spiritual athlete of the Optina spirit, imbibed in Russia.

Separated from the Fatherland by the fanatical ones, the Christ-bearing ascetic was persecuted by weak Christians—politician-administrators among the clergy in America. His tormented soul suffered deeply, to tears, when people reviled him. Oh, people! They even slandered the Lord Christ Himself. In days of sorrow, the Ascetic had a vision. The Lord Passionbearer Tsar Nicholas Alexandrovich appeared and said, "I understand you; I myself have endured all such things."

Alaska with its harsh climate frightened many. Russian monks who arrived in America did not want to go there, let alone the tonsured ones in America. The Elder often repeated, "Love for Christ leaves our sinful planet." He always fervently prayed for Russia and all Orthodox countries.

In one of the Easter nights, still in his temporal life, pondering about Russia, Father Gerasim wrote: "For me, this Feast, this holy night spent alone, clearly speaks of the Risen Christ, of the time when we will all rise again and forever sing about Christ's Easter."

Sacrifice of Holy Russia.
Hieromonk Gerasim.

"Like a lamb, in the midst of the throne, shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.
And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.

(Rev. 7, 17 and 8, 1.)

In Russia and at the edge of the universe in Alaska, people with a living conscience suffered for the crucified and bloodied Russia of the 20th century. In his desert on an uninhabited island in the marshy swamps of Elov Island over many decades, the solitary monk-missionary hieromonk Gerasim († 1969) wrote, sighing:

"Since 1917, since the accursed revolution, I have shed rivers of tears. Today, on the 3rd of July, I served the Liturgy and commemorated the Royal Martyr, his Family. I as if saw the cellar of the Ipatiev house and that dreadful bloody scene: I shed tears and prayed for myself, not for the Martyrs, no, but for the entire Russian people, asked them, the Martyrs, to forgive all of us, to pray for us sinners. The Christians of the early centuries immediately counted all those slain for Christ as holy martyrs, they prayed not for them, but to them, for those who suffered for Christ. And there were innocent four Princesses and the Royal Heir Alexei. They all suffered for 18 months under harsh custody. They were all great martyrs!

A dreadful night is approaching, and I will serve the Matins. Millions of the Orthodox Russian people did not protect their good, meek Tsar and his Family. It is terrifying to think about what happened that night. But what's even more terrifying is that there were bishops, priests, educated monks against the Tsar. It seems all the common folk, I think, were for the Tsar...

In 1917, I had a dream. The whole sky was black, terrifying. And in its midst was light, and there was the Crucified Christ. He was dying! His head was bowed, and His hand muscles trembled from suffering. And I heard a voice: "Pray, Russia is crucified." And soon we in Alaska learned about the violent persecutions of the believing Christians and the destruction of its sacred places there."

Does the world see how many tears the Russian people shed in the last 70 years? This world, lying in wickedness (1 John 5:19), neither knows nor desires to know! Even though it shares in the sin of regicide. The conscience of the world, the universe for these years, remained silent! The Christian conscience in Russia was bound, and today it still lives—hidden and known only to God.

But God's patience has its limits. God sees the truth, but He may not speak it soon. He awaits the increase of Heroes of Virtue! And for them to sing the Song of Universal Repentance and reflect the heavenly azure of purest prayer of the saints, purifying the souls of the entire world.

When the world matures to perceive with spiritual eyes the dazzling beauty of the sacrifice of Holy Russia for peace, then the long-awaited Hour of Justice on earth will arrive. The world will appreciate its noble part—the Chalice of suffering for the truth of the Russian people for its salvation! And the other part will perish, for it chose darkness, savoring the demonic allure of corrupted hellish pleasures.

The Russian people, by the example of their last Tsar resembling Christ, will redeem themselves with suffering and repentance, led by God's glorified heavenly Monarch, the holy great martyr Emperor Nicholas II.

We glorify You, Holy Great Martyr and Passion-bearer Tsar Nicholas, and honor your holy sufferings, for you intercede to Christ our God on our behalf. Amen.

Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the Kingdom (Luke 12:32)

You're posting a lot of great material, Unseen.Warfare ! It's important to preserve all this in ONE place : here !

Where did that picture come from of the two Platina founders ?

Yes maybe you could find the source of that frightening statement that the Serbs somehow got all that material. It seems to me it could only have happened maybe as a part of a deal for Platina under Fr Gerasim [Eliel] to be accepted by the Serbian Patriarchate. Maybe a hidden codicil ? If you find out, please let me know, as that is important and scary that such priceless material could have been siphoned off. No one else had access to it but Fr Herman by that stage.

What about Fr Seraphim's thesis at Berkeley ? How on earth did that ever get put online anyway ?? Did someone have a copy, or was it in the Fr Seraphim Archives, if there WERE such a thing ? And then they put it online for anyone to be able to read ?

Have you had time to read through it ? What do you think of it, if so ?

Isn't it incredible that Eugene R., the future Fr Seraphim, was so deeply into Taoism that he would study it, write a thesis on it. Then, some years later, switch to Orthodoxy and leave Taoism completely behind as if that phase of his life never existed ?

Congratulations on the intrepid searching done by both Fr Joseph and you !
