has removed the halos from a €2 coin commemorating the 1,150th anniversary
of the arrival of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Moravia.

All too sadly this is the reality of the EU. This amending of the design demonstrates the extent of secularism in the EU and the lack of appropriate respect for Europe's Christian heritage, for which the whole continent should be eternally grateful and openly celebrate.
Wouldn't it be problematic to use icons for coinage in any case? They wouldn't receive the veneration due to them. Removing the halos doesn't fix that, of course.

Yes, that is exactly the truth. The average secular European hasn't the slightest awareness what a debt is owed to the Christian heritage of our ancestors. They have all the residual benefits of the untold riches of the Faith, but they are entirely unaware to whom they should be grateful. Sad.

Good point. However, one can at least appreciate the fact that Slovakia was wanting to express honour and grateful remembrance towards these saints by giving them such a visible place. It is needful, too, at this hour, to put the people back into awareness of their heritage. Perhaps it would have a positive effect. I think that God often blesses well-intentioned mistakes, as much as He does correct actions.
