Orthodox Metropolitan Nikolaj dies today

Metropolitans NIKOLAJ (R) and HERMAN Bratislava, Slovakia, September 2004
PRESOV, East Slovakia/PRAGUE, Jan 30 (CTK) - Archbishop Nikolaj, Orthodox Metropolitan in the Czech Lands and in Slovakia, died in Presov early today, aged 79, Professor Milan Gerka, secretary of the Orthodox Church synod, has told CTK.

Nikolaj has been seriously ill for a longer time and he did not exercise his office to the full.

He had been the top spiritual leader of the Orthodox Church in the Czech and Slovak republics since 2000 when he replaced patriarch Dorotej after his death.

Nikolaj's successor will probably be chosen on Wednesday.

Metropolitan Nikolaj was born in Slovakia in Hanigovce, Slovakia, in 1927. He was ordained in 1950 and in 1965 he was elected Presov bishop.

The Presov chair was raised to archbishopric in 1988.

+Alexis II Condemns Military Hazings

Alexy II urges clergy to help eliminate brutality towards soldiers
ITAR-TASS - Moscow,Russia

MOSCOW, January 30 (Itar-Tass) - Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Alexy II has urged the clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church to step up cooperation with the Armed Forces and to help eradicate the practice of what is known there as ‘dedovshchina,’ roughly parallel to hazing found in the armies of other countries.

Dedovshchina, a system of subjugation of young soldiers by fellow servicemen doing the last year of Army service, has been rife in the practically all branches of the Armed Forces here and may take versatile forms, but most often it involves acts of brutal beating, which not infrequently inflicts bodily damage on the ‘hazed’ soldiers.

“The situation calls for a closer look at cooperation between the Church and the Armed Forces, on the one hand, and other law enforcement agencies, on the other hand,” Alexy II said at the ceremony of opening the Annual Christmas Readings on pedagogy, psychology, education and related problems.

“Clergymen’s activity in military units must lay the grounds for stronger internal concord there and better understanding among servicemen,” he said.

Alexy II recalled the most recent and extremely resounding case of ‘dedovshchina’ that occurred during the nationwide New Year vacations in an auxiliary military unit servicing the Chelyabinsk Tank Academy in the Urals, where a sergeant and a group of soldiers in the second year of service literally crippled a newly recruited serviceman.

“It’s important to rule out the very possibility of a repetition of the cases like the one in Chelyabinsk,” Alexy II said. “Such situations should vanish from servicemen’s life.”

Alexy II believes the degree of interaction between the Church and government agencies in general is dependent on effective legislation.

Metropolitan Herman was the guest of Metropolitan Nikolaj [left] during an official visit to the Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia in September, 2004.
SYOSSET, NY [OCA Communications] — His Beatitude, Metropolitan Herman, Primate of the Orthodox Church in America, sent condolences to the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in the Czech Lands and Slovakia upon learning of the repose of the Church's Primate, His Beatitude, Metropolitan Nikolaj, on Monday, January 30, 2006.

Metropolitan Nikolaj, 78, had been in declining health for several months.

According to the Very Rev. Dr. Stefan Sak, the Church's secretary for foreign affairs, "His Beatitude has served the Orthodox Church in the Czech Lands and Slovakia faithfull and all the members of the Church feel pain in his departure, which left the Church without its highest pastor."

Metropolitan Nikolaj was elected and enthroned as Primate on June 4, 2000.

The Church in the Czech Lands and Slovakia experienced major difficulties after the fall of communism in the early 1990s, especially with the division of the former Czechoslovakia into two independent states. The Church maintains two dioceses in the Czech Republic and an additional two dioceses in Slovakia.

Metropolitan Nikolaj's funeral will be celebrated on Saturday, February 4, at Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Presov, Slovakia.

Further information will be released as it is received.

May Metropolitan Nikolaj's memory be eternal!
