The RCC says that the Ecumenical Councils are infaliable, but what about when the Pope decrees something that is the opposite of what an infaliable Ecumenical Council teaches?

Well, to be fair, the RC dogma of papal infallibility would say that such a thing would not come to pass "ex cathedra". However, the RC's also teach that an ecumenical council is legitimately so only by the consent of the Pope, so theoretically what an ecumenical council teaches is also what the Pope teaches, and vice versa.

LT,

Thanks, I was hoping you'd chime in on this one. Like I said, I intend on checking Ott to read for myself what you are affirming here, which is no surprise to me, really.

Raising the right hand of Phil...

Ludwig Ott, author of Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma, published by TAN. It's pretty intense. :)

Phil, now I really feel stupid! just 2 weeks ago I had that book on my nightstand, right there next to my glasses. Oy! (of course I was actually using it to keep the bed level at night since my floor slants;))

From another thread:

Pope Honorius of Rome was condemned by the sixth ecumenical council for monothelitism. He wrote a letter to Patriarch Sergius who had asked not for a personal opinion as RC authors allege but for confirmation of the teaching of the Church . Honorius responded by teaching monothelitism.
