In one place Erickson wrote this:

Very easily and all too often, we create stereotypes of others; we spend our time denouncing ‘straw men.’ This makes our witness to the world much less persuasive than it would be if we were a little more honest about ourselves and more willing to see others as they are rather than as we think they are.”

And in another place this:

Some would take Orthodox claims to be the one true Church in an exclusive rather than an inclusive sense, so that outside the canonical limits of the Orthodox Church as we currently perceive them there is simply undifferentiated darkness, in which the pope is no better than a witchdoctor.

:? Talk about creating 'straw men'. The picture of traditionalists that he draws here is one of the most obvious examples of creating a straw man that I have ever seen. If only he would practice a little of what he preaches.

Nicholas,

Very good point. What makes it very good is that not only does he make the statements you say, he at no time backs them up with a substantial argument.

As I have pointed out before about seminary schools, I think the very fact that they have a layman as a Dean, is indication that they place more value intellectual knowledge about God than spiritual - but that's just my opinion.
