"Saint John of Rila (c. 876–946) is the first Bulgarian hermit and the patron saint of the Bulgarian people.
Revered for his ascetic lifestyle, miraculous healings, and deep devotion, he founded the famous Rila Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the spiritual heart of Bulgaria.
Born in Skrino, Bulgaria, John left his worldly life as a herder to join a monastery, and later lived in deep isolation in the Rila wilderness.
According to Orthodox tradition, his steadfast faith and prayers sustained him in the wilderness, leading to numerous miracles that drew followers and eventually established the monastery.
His legacy continues to inspire profound devotion.
His miraculous relics are kept at the Rila Monastery today.
