What shall we do in these troubled times? 1905

Oh, if our unfortunate workers only knew who is leading them, who is sending these troublemakers and instigators after them, they would reject them with horror, as if they were poisonous vermin, as if they were plague-ridden animals! After all, these are the so-called "social democrats," these are revolutionaries who have long ago renounced God in their actions; they have renounced, and perhaps never even knew, the Christian faith; they vilify its ministers, its statutes, and mock its sacred objects.
Their main nest is abroad; they dream of enslaving the whole world to themselves; in their secret protocols, they call us Christians downright beasts, to whom God, they say, gave the human form only so that they, the supposedly chosen ones, would not be disgusted by using our services... With satanic cunning, they catch the frivolous in their nets, promise them an earthly paradise, but carefully conceal from them their hidden goals, their criminal dreams.

S. A. Nilus has written a book about the end of the world197. It's coming along very quickly. The entire edition is already sold out, and they're starting on a new one. The task of publishing this book has been entrusted to two merchants. One of them is immensely wealthy—he supplies greenery not only in Russia but also abroad. They visited me recently.

Honorable Sergei Alexandrovich!
I sincerely thank you for your attention to me, expressed in sending me your book “On the Bank of God's River”. I read all your books with great interest and fully share your views on recent events. The people of this age live by faith in progress and lull themselves into unfulfilled dreams. Persistently and with some bitterness they drive away from themselves the very thought of the end of the world and the coming of the Antichrist. Their eyes are spiritually blinded. Seeing they do not see and hearing they do not understand. But from the truly believing children of God, the meaning of these events is not hidden, even more: on whom God's favor rests, both the time of the coming of the Antichrist and the end of the world will be revealed to them. When the Lord pronounces His terrible judgment on the sinful world: "I shall not have My Spirit to abide in these men, which are flesh"; then He will say to His faithful servants: “Get out of their midst and go away, and touch no uncleanness. I will receive you” ( Gen. 6:3 ; 2 Cor. 6:17 ; Is. 52:11 ). And hide them from the eyes of the world, sighing in fear of future disasters. Therefore, great is the merit of those who remind the people of this age of the great times and events to come. May the Lord help you to speak about this in the hearing of the world of everything in due time and without time, “with all longsuffering and edification” ( 2 Tim. 4:2 )!
Your sincere admirer and pilgrim, Bishop Feofan.

Where does this come from? You don't have to ponder this question for long: read "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" by S. A. Nilus and you'll see that all of this is being done very systematically, deliberately, by those who need to turn all of humanity into their workhorses. And the facts, the most astonishing facts, are there.

I said that the Germans' attitude toward prisoners of war, and generally toward the populations of countries at war with them, is reminiscent of the spirit of the Talmud. It's noteworthy that the Jews, followers of the Talmud, adopted German as their native language, albeit in a highly distorted form, while the Germans, as we see, embraced the spirit of their Talmud. It's not for nothing that our military commanders expel Jews from the military zone: the Jews have too sharply emphasized their spiritual kinship with the Germans through acts of treason, betrayal, and welcoming Germans with bread and salt. One only needs to read the famous "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" to see that the Germans steadfastly follow the precepts of these sages. They have clearly adopted their principles, anticipated their vision of world domination, and do not refuse their cooperation in this criminal undertaking. How long this alliance will last—who will deceive whom, who will enslave whom—time will tell. And to all the peoples of the earth, a warning is given by Divine Providence: look where the departure from the covenants of Christ leads, what will become of all humanity if it follows this path of apostasy. The earth will then turn into a living hell, people will senselessly exterminate one another, it will become some kind of global madhouse, breathing hellish hatred and malice against one another. In vain do the Germans think that by inciting hatred and cruelty against the Russians, the French, and the English, they will come to love one another—Germans against Germans: a heart infected with hatred, trained in cruelty, is incapable of love for anyone. Hatred becomes the element of its life; hell, all hell with all its inhabitants, enters such a heart and takes up residence there. And the day will come when, unless they repent, these people will devour one another like rabid beasts.

I am assuming that all of this is being done intentionally, although those who carry out these intentions probably act unconsciously. It is time for us to be convinced that a conspiracy exists against the faith and the Church, against all of humanity, that these worldwide conspirators are striving to eradicate everything sacred from the souls of believers in order to enslave the whole world to themselves, that they have already done much to this end, they are already boasting that almost all the gold in the world is in their hands, that they have captured almost the entire press, all the nerves of the spiritual and material life of humanity ... Note: it is somehow not customary for us, with the exception of Black Hundred publications, to talk about Masons: their activities are so skillfully concealed that even one of the bishops once expressed doubt to me: do any Masons really exist? In such a state of affairs, it is natural that they seem ashamed to speak openly about these conspirators: what if it turns out that this is nothing more than a myth? But it seems that the matter is becoming clearer and clearer every day; the enemies are giving themselves away; Now they themselves have admitted that the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" is not a myth, but a real report by one of their oldest sages to their Basel Congress in 1897. Now, an honest Christian need only read these protocols again without prejudice, compare them with what we are experiencing, so that his eyes will be opened to the terrible danger coming to God's world, to all of humanity... The impression from reading these protocols falls on the heart like a heavy nightmare, as if a breath of air wafted from somewhere in a dark, fetid dungeon, but at the same time you cannot help but recognize the satanically clever plan, obviously drawn up over several centuries: you will say that such a plan is beyond the power of one mind...
...
I am asked: to what extent do I attach faith and importance to the famous “Protocols of the Elders of Zion”, published in the famous book by S.A. Nilus “Near is, at the doors”?
The venerable S.A. Nilus has no doubt that these Protocols are directly connected to the mystery of lawlessness, the work of the Antichrist, and are the fruits of the labors of the "host of Satan," mentioned in the Apocalypse, Chapter 2, Verse 9. Reading them, one cannot help but conclude that they are truly not the work of a single individual, but rather the creation of more than one generation of the Church's enemies, cunning and crafty, including men of extraordinary intelligence and strong will, men who lacked even a single spark of Christian morality and who were ready to do anything to achieve their goal. And their goal is the establishment of a universal kingdom under the leadership of their own king. All this is very similar to the cherished dreams of the Jews about their own universal king, and according to the teachings of the Holy Fathers—the Antichrist. The "Protocols..." are thoroughly imbued with the Jewish spirit, the Jewish ideal. On the other hand, a dark current of Buddhist delusions is flowing into the same stream, further muddying the course of life for all of humanity. And, strangely enough, Buddhist ideals are somehow intertwined with Jewish ideals. It would seem: what do a Jew and a Buddhist have in common? But they march hand in hand toward a common goal. Clearly, they share a common leader—the enemy of God and man. He is preparing the way for his protégé, the Antichrist.

Chapter 14. Elder Hieroschemamonk Barsanuphius
III. Notes by S.A. Nilus
Just as Elder Macarius had I.V. Kireevsky at his feet, and Elder Ambrose had K.N. Leontiev at his feet, so Elder Barsanuphius had Sergei Alexandrovich Nilus, a man of great intelligence, multifaceted talent, and a heart ardently loving and faithful Orthodox believer. The Lord destined him to labor more than anyone else in the perpetuation of the sanctity that shone forth in immortal Optina. With the elders' blessing, Sergei Alexandrovich and his wife settled near Optina in the house where Leontiev had previously lived and began researching unpublished hagiographic materials in the monastery library. The result of his labors were wondrous books that testify to the spiritual power of the ascetics of Holy Russia. Specifically, "The Power of God and the Weakness of Man," "The Sanctuary Under the Bushel," "The Harvest of Life, Wheat and Tares," and his Optina Diary, "On the Banks of the River of God," in two parts (the second contains his biography). The name of Elder Barsanuphius appears frequently in this diary. He was the elder of the Niluses, their spiritual father, and they regularly came to him for a blessing.
Sometimes the elder assigned them to answer letters that required simple and straightforward responses. Thus, communication between them continued.
During Nilus's stay in Optina, the aforementioned Father Innocent also resided there, performing his obedience in the monastery chancery.
Sharing his Optina memories with us, he also mentioned S.A. Nilus. “I often had to,” wrote Fr. Innocent, “help Nilus pack his books and carry them from the little house where he and his wife lived to the icon-book shop. Almost every day Nilus came to our office, talked, and worked with us. I remember an incident, it seems in 1909, during such a conversation the office novice Fr. Pavel Krutikov said to him: “Sergei Alexandrovich, you are causing us such horror: after all, nothing is felt in Russia now, perhaps this will happen, but now there is no reason to worry so much.” S.A. said: “Eh, fathers, fathers! These walls hide from you the terrible environment in which we live; And thank God that you don’t know everything, but I am not a prophet, and I will tell you that you will experience for yourself everything that I tell you.” And indeed, we did not have much time to live peacefully within the monastery walls.”
Nilus lived in Optina during the most illuminating years of Father Barsanuphius's eldership. Below are several entries from this time, illuminating certain aspects of this elder's spirituality:

We Russians occupy a unique place in the modern world—not because of our personal qualities or attributes, but because of the historical, or rather, supra-historical, significance that has proven to be inherent in our homeland. We stand before an objective fact, an excellent commentary on which is S. Nilus's article, which appeared in 1905, was immediately reprinted in "The Soul-Beneficial Interlocutor," and is now included in "Orthodox Life," which is being published simultaneously.

Yet Christians read the Holy Gospels and suddenly, with astonishment, behold before them the very same Jews as in the time of Christ—people who, over the course of twenty centuries, have not changed in the slightest regarding their sentiments of hostility toward the Savior. What good, then, can be expected to result from such a fact? Furthermore, two Jewish works have played a fateful and tragic role for the entire Jewish people: the Talmud and *The Protocols of the Elders of Zion*.

(brief excerpt)
The Protocols of Zion
There is one last document we should look at in this period of the beginning of the twentieth century before the great revolutionaries of our century, which is a rather controversial document. It is called The Protocols of the Elders of Zion and, because it presents itself in the form of a Jewish document, it has aroused a great deal of dispute. If you read any history book, of the two world wars especially; in fact, any history book written before the Second World War, you will find there an almost universal statement that “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion” are a fabrication deliberately to discredit the Jews, that it is a totally fantastic thing which has no reality to it, and they will point out that either the person who discovered it was himself an agent of somebody and therefore deliberately fabricated them, or else -- as at least one source states -- that he was fooled by the Tsarist police who simply wanted to invent these in order to make an excuse for eliminating the Jews in the pogroms. There are others who take the document so seriously that they tend to go to the other extreme and they see everywhere a Jewish plot so much so that they can hardly take a step without fainting. We must try to look at this document somewhat objectively to see what is actually in it, how it was found and what is its significance.
From the Orthodox point of view, it is most interesting how it was presented to the world for the first time. It was discovered by a lady, we do not know who, who gave it to the person who printed it and it is supposed to have come from the West and to have been written in French and then translated into Russian. But the person to whom this document was given was a man by the name of Sergei Nilus who printed it together with another document which he had recently discovered, The Conversation of Motovilov with St. Seraphim. He presented these two documents to the world at the same time in order to show 1) what is the truth of Orthodoxy and the acquirement of the Grace of the Holy Spirit, and 2) what is the plot of Satan to overthrow Orthodoxy. It was printed in 1905 (1903?)
Nilus himself was a very respected ecclesiastical writer, a popular journalist who went to Optina and even lived there and various other places; and there can be no doubt that he had nothing to do with making up a forgery. He accepted this text as quite legitimate and presented it to the world as a warning. We will see that the text has two new points in it which have not come out in previous revolutionary documents. But apart from these, it is exactly the same as the philosophy of Bakunin, Weishaupt and all these other thinkers. Some people say it is not a very original document -- it's plagiaristic, etc. -- and probably so, because all these ideas were circulating and this particular document -- in fact, we see that one writer [Webster] compares on one side of the page “The Protocols” and on the other side the text of Weishaupt written in 1785. The philosophy is the same. And so, most likely this is a legitimate document which is some kind of notes taken at a lodge of people who happen to be Jews and they present the philosophy in a very Jewish way, just as earlier there were people who presented the revolution as a triumph of pan-Germania and others presented the idea that the whole world would become some sort of French republic, and this took the form of some Jewish Masons or Illuminati who represent the revolution as their plot.

In 1935 Ivan Michailovich married. His wife Helene became his inseparable helper, and a writer herself. She was the niece of Sergei Nilus, who discovered and deciphered Motovilov's manuscript detailing his conversation with St. Seraphim of Sarov on the acquisition of the Holy Spirit. Nilus spent years in Constantine Leontiev’s house in Optina, being under the spiritual guidance of Elder Barsanuphius. There he compiled a series of books taken from manuscripts in the Optina library, the most outstanding of which was the autobiography of the Optina elder Theodosius.

At the beginning of our century, that is, more than seventy years ago, a book by Sergius Nilus was published, the subtitle of which was: "Antichrist as a Near Political Possibility." In this book, he spoke of the "mystery of lawlessness" that has been in effect since the days of the holy Apostle Paul (Thessalonians 2:7).

Today, things are different. The Antichrist, in Nilus's words, has become a close political possibility. The development of the "mystery of lawlessness" colors not only political life but also all contemporary religious and moral life in the world. True, in the Orthodox Church, and especially in our Church Abroad, it manifests itself less openly than in the West and is less noticeable to the average parishioner. But it exists and is manifesting itself ever more powerfully and vividly. Dialogue between the Eastern Churches and Catholics and other heretics may very soon confront us with very difficult problems, to which each of us must have a ready answer for ourselves and our flock. But that's not all.

Many Confessors took a clear stand on this issue.
"While there is a temple of God that is not from the 'Church of the Evil Ones,' go to church when you can, and if not, pray at home... You will say: where can I receive communion? From whom? I will answer: the Lord will show; or an Angel will administer communion, for in the 'Church of the Evil Ones' there is not and cannot be the Body and Blood of the Lord..." (Confessor Sergius Nilus).
