True Orthodox Women's Monastery

Post by Zeb59 »

Hello

I am inquiring for my wife. Does anyone know of a True Orthodox women's monastery that has regularly scheduled services that are open to the public? Preferably in the Northeast, Mid-West or Mid-Atlantic, but would consider travel to other states. Thank you.

Sorry for the late reply as I didn't see your post until yesterday. Then I had to chec the information.
Actually, it turns out that the Convent in New York state that I planned to recommend is in the process of moving locations !
That means they will have a much nicer place, one would think !

Their website gives this address and promises more information coming soon.

I like the name of the street, which brings to mind the old days of the Troubadours in France !

14 Courtly Circle, Owego, NY 13827

Your wife is interested in becoming a nun ? She could either write to them or phone once they get set up. I didn't copy the phone number as I figured it would annoy them to be asked questions when they are just getting settled. But they would be happy to hear that someone is interested so she should contact them. This is Mother Agapia {Stephanopoulos}. I assume that the Convent is under Met Agafangel still, but that needs to be verified. For sure it is not World Orthodox.

Hope this helps.

I believe there are more, but I do know of the Holy Nativity Convent in Brookline MA and the St. Elizabeth convent in Etna of course, and there is a GOC-K convent somewhere in Farmingdale New York, Convent of St. Syncletike, but apparently it's closed to visitors. I think the GOC-K might have another convent somewhere in New York state. I'd suggest contacting someone at the St. John's monastery for information on that.

ROCANA has a small convent somewhere in New York, but you'd have to contact Vladyka Andronik to find that information. HOCNA has a very small convent in Florida near their parish in Orlando. The TOC-D under Met. Alexei has a convent in Pennsylvania, "Monastery of St. Mary Magdalene", but last time I spoke to Abp. Nikolai, he mentioned it's not too active.

ROCA-V probably has a convent in Canada somewhere too, and so does the GOC-K, but I do not know. Even though it's outside the area where you're looking, HOCNA has a convent in Washington state and they might still have a convent in Warrenton, Virginia, but my notes say its closed to visitors.

Hopefully this gives some good ideas where to look.

To be fair, sometimes women want to visit convents but don't necessarily want to become a nun.
Note: this should be in the "Monasteries" section, so as soon as I figure out how, I'll move it there. (It will still be on front page; just the topic will change, as this is for new people trying to figure out Orthodoxy.)

Thank you for moving the post, Fr Joseph. I saw the post one day then tried to find it the next to reply, but was at a loss, since it wasn't in the Monasteries forum. This helps all future readers to locate the valuable information that Sava has given us.

I had no idea there were so many TOC Convents !

Yes that's true, good point, that it may be for spiritual refreshment that any woman would want to spend time at a good Convent. I was assuming too much there, sorry !
