Home hazards: pins, needles, irons, toasters, etc.

The resting place of threads that were very valid in 2004, but not so much in 2024. Basically this is a giant historical archive.

Maria,

Yes, their hem clips are exactly right. I hate pins and had more pricks and punctures from them than I care to think about. Too easily dropped and standing on one is definitely not fun!

Immediately after sewing and before going to bed, my husband and I search the floor for any hidden needles or pins using huge magnets. If said needle weaves itself in our carpet, that can be very dangerous. Thankfully, our sewing machine has been placed in an area where we have wooden floors, but sometimes those needles can bounce quite a distance.

Pins are not the only danger. I was impaled by a sewing machine needle, and it broke leaving a small piece (about one to two mm in my left index finger). That happened about two years ago. It is still in there. I am still waiting for my body to reject it and then work its way to the surface. Several sewing buddies told me that once a sewing machine needle impales itself, that kind of accident only happens once. I hope they are speaking the truth. [I did not go to the hospital. I carefully cleaned it and put some antibacterial ointment on it, and I was fine.]

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

My worst experience was as a child. Don't ask how because children are into everything and careless with it. I woke up one night with a terrible pain in an upper arm and found a darning needle stuck right through the soft tissue. Long suspected that one or other of my younger brothers had been messing about with it during the day and simply put it down and forgotten all about it.

Those were the days, children played outside and not hunched over televisions or IT equipment. And no one cared what brand of pumps you wore.
