Traditional Orthodox Churches in North Carolina

Post by jimhuffman »

First off, thanks to all who started this site. I just discovered it a few days ago, and find it useful and helpful.

Let me introduce myself. I'm a Lutheran (Missouri Synod) who is on the way out of the LCMS. I'm not sure where I should go, and seek your guidance and help.

I am familiar with Orthodoxy, but mostly through reading such men as Schmemann, and others like him from St. Vladimir's.

I have been in 2 Orthodox churches -- one an Antiochean church 50 miles away, and an independent Orthodox church.

There is a Greek Orthodox congregation closeby, but some of the stuff I read on the GO archdiocese website made me very uncomfortable -- one article, for example, said that salvation can be found outside of Christianity.

Are there any traditional Orthodox churches in North Carolina? And are there any suggestions for reading about Orthodoxy?

Thanks for your help.

Jim,

Coming from the Missouri synod you might have some appreciation for "tuff times in the Church". The Orthodox Church is experiencing one of those times.

We have a church in Richmond Virginia, and I am unfamiliar with what else might be nearby.

Suggested reading? I would generally stay far away from St. Vladimirs bookstore as I think almost all traditional minded Orthodox consider them as a source of substantial errors.

Here are some more traditional bookstores...

Some good on-line stuff here...

The one in Durham has not really been functional for a long time now.

Do you mean that the church in Durham has not been functioning?

Thanks for the clarification.

Jim,

I feel I must mention to you that the ROCOR is in the process of joining all the churches called Orthodox which are involved in ecumenism, in communion with non-orthodox bodies, and recognize the Mysteries of heretical churches.

As you may be aware by now, in Orthodoxy, your communion is your faith. So what would be the point of going to the ROCOR church when the GOA church is closer.

Thanks for the heads-up regarding the ROCOR. That's the type of guidance I'm seeking.

And -- even as a Lutheran -- I would agree about the one's communion being one's faith. It's important to remember that.

Thanks again.

Jim
