What I have read from googling the internet is that a Reader is NOT a member of the clergy. One OCA site for readers uses the terms "he or she" interchangebly when referring to Readers.

The tonsured order of Reader is the first order in the ranks of the clergy.

I hope the OCA site is referring to readers in the generic sense.

Tonsuring women in the GOA

Post by dotfarmer »

:( too sad!! There is nothing that can be said to make the tonsuring of women as clergy, even a reader, acceptable or Orthodox. So this is just plain sad.

Do you mean ever? So the Church is more Orthodox today than it was during the Byzantine era? I love these American sects! So-o-o-o Protestant an ethos by the way, Ralph Waldo Emerson would be proud. City on a hill either way, yours OR theirs.

Sincerely:
Joseph

Really. You all MUST teach me this trick of seeing around that HUGE log in your eye.

Tom,

Rather than googling for information which may be as open to interpretation (as in "reader" in generic sense) and as potentially erroneous as your own posts, perhaps you should look at the service for the Tonsure of a Reader? 8)

Then you might understand why people are a bit upset at this violation of the Canons. Perhaps actually reading a few Canons might have set you straight on that, as well....

Please don't talk about the log in the eye of those who are doing their best to protect the Orthodox Church from liberal encroachments. If enough of a public outcry is made from the laos, this will stop, as it must.

Vicki
