Old Believers

In my town (Erie, PA) the Old Belivers have a beautiful large Cathedral that I have visited on a few occasions. A question I have is, how do they differ from other Orthodox? I am not interested in becoming one, but I am curious in how they differ.

The Iconoclast heretics were not nearly as bad as we have today. It is not as though they would not allow Icons - they certainly did allow icons. It was just that they demanded the icons be hung a little higher is all, so that they could not be venerated. And to think the Church "condemned" them ...

As you know, most of the Hierarchs of the OCA of Metropolitan Herman, are converts from heretodox religions such as Archbishop Peter. A french convert to Orthodoxy, or Archbishop Dimitri or Bishop Seraphim (Bishop Seraphim knows a lot on Russian Monastism).

The questioned to be asked for sure is he still part of the GOA and is his movement and organization sanctioned by the GOA bishop of that region.

Either a yes or no answer would be a cause of concern, either answer would indicate a serious problem, although not necessarily the same one.
