Coptic refers to the ancient liturgical language used in Egypt.

The Coptic church is the continuation of those anathematized/cut-off at the 4th Ecumenical Council in Chalcedon and who primarily reside in Egypt. They have very diligently kept nearly everything unchanged since that time, but to a fault, because the one thing they should have changed, their belief regarding our Lord Jesus Christ, they have not changed.

When those attending the 4th Ecumenical Council remained split after much deliberation, it was decided to take the two confessions of faith and place them in the tomb of the Holy Great Martyr Evthymia. The tomb was sealed and everyone spent 3 days in prayer. When the tomb was opened, one confession was in St. Evthymia's right hand and the other was beneath her feet. Thus the decision was made by God, through His servant St. Evthymia, and the Council was concluded. The Orthodox Church commemorates this miracle annually on July 11th.
