Scene of hell compared with the Milky Way

I just found this medieval Roman Catholic image of hell that is so similar to those found in Holy Orthodoxy. The scene of souls falling into what looks like the mouth of Lucifer startled me because it resembles the picture of the Milky Way often seen in photos of the heavens.
