Understanding the Kasrut laws

When I was Jewish I tried to keep the Kasrut laws, now looking back on it it doesn't make much sense how can an animal that God created be "unclean". But my question is this, since all the things that God created is perfect, why did he instruct the Israelites the keep Koshe?
