Discussion and criticism of GOC-K & SiR Union

Post by Maria »

Father Enoch posted the following letter from Archbishop Chrysostomos of Etna (SiR) at NFTU:

http://nftu.net/abp-chrysostomos-etna-g ... set-aside/

Since the Archbishop wants neither a heated public debate concerning this matter nor "foolish and evil prattle," I have only copied the two bolded paragraphs (10 and 11) from his letter so that we may discuss this important matter in private. This letter is dated 16 February 2014 (Old Style), which is March 1, 2014 (Civil Calendar).

  • 10. We will close on a necessarily negative note, but for the positive purpose of enjoining you to set aside the pettiness that so besmirches the Church world today and to work for the greater good of Orthodoxy. First, be assured that none of our principles, none of our moderation, and none of the spirit bequeathed to us by our late and venerable Metropolitan Cyprian have been set aside, as some naysayers have suggested. We have called others, as always, to act in a Christian way and to disagree in a gentlemanly way on matters that are, in fact, theologoumena, acting in good faith and with mutual respect. It seems now that they have also called us to act as we have asked them to act, and we are doing just that.

If none of the principles of Metropolitan Cyprian have been put aside, does this mean that the Cyprianite ecclesiology was not wrong, and that Cyprianism has embraced mere theologoumena but not heresy?

  • 12. Various childish rumors about the triumph of one side over the other—a triumphalism inappropriate to Christians—have been heard, in this country at least, on both sides. We have flatly told our own clergy and faithful to avoid communing for a period of time, should they engage in such foolish and evil prattle. The Church belongs to all who have sacrificed for True Orthodoxy, and we have all functioned within the Church. Those who doubt that should hang their heads in shame.

Am I understanding this correctly? If members of the GOC-Kallinikos or the SiR openly question the decision of the hierarchy in the GOC-Kallinikos and the Synod In Resistance to join in Eucharistic communion, then these dissident members could be subject to a penance (avoiding communion)?

Another comment that is rather strange: apparently Archbishop Chrysostomos will have to change his name to avoid confusion? Wow! There were several Apostles that had the same first name, weren't there?

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

I believe this means that the Abp. Chrysostomos of Etna is saying that the Cyprianite eccleisological view of the Patriarchate as still being part of the Church and having Grace is now an acceptable theological opinion within the GOC(K) which they are uniting with.

IN Christ,

Fr. Enoch

I think that we must wait for the final document agreed by both synods and read it. For the moment, we are still waiting for it and talking a lot is really vain.

The union has been finally accomplished yesterday 5/18 March 2014 and will be followed with a magnificent concelebration on 10/23 March, Sunday of the Veneration of the Holy Cross! Glory to God for this historical union that will be manifest on the same day in which, 90 years ago, the Orthodox Calendar was changed as the first step of the heresy of Ecumenism.
This is the official announcement from our Holy Synod :

I am impatient to read the whole documents. It is said that they were accepted by the synod. Following the declaration of the Synod in Resistance bishop Chryosostomus announcing they did not renounce Cyprian of Fili's teaching, I guess a cautious reading is needed. Are the document available?

Yes, if you find any recent documents that have been approved by the GOC-K Synod and have been translated into English, please do link them here.

I changed the thread title to reflect the change in status now that Eucharistic Communion between the GOC-K and the SiR has been finalized.

Will the sister churches of the SiR be assimilated or will they retain their separate synods?
