Another Spicy Story out of Today's Russia

Post by Barbara »

President Putin's spokesman, Dimitry Peskov, has descended the same slippery slope traversed by Patriarch Kirill with his 'disappearing Breguet' a few years ago.

" [Tatyana] Navka, who won a gold medal for ice dancing at the 2006 Winter Olympics, announced that she and Peskov would marry in Sochi, Putin's favorite Black Sea resort. The event took place in one of the town's most expensive hotels, the Rodina Grand, last Saturday. When I tried today to pre-book a night at the Rodina (which translates to English as Motherland) for the end of September, the cheapest room cost $500 per night. Peskov and Navka booked the entire hotel.

Putin's longtime opponent, corruption fighter Alexei Navalny, however, ....identified the timepiece as a Richard Mille RM 52-01, one of a limited edition of just 30, and wrote to a U.S. store that sells them to discover the price: $620,000.

Responding to the outrage and derision ....the presidential press secretary said the watch was a wedding present from Navka and that it was "very expensive indeed but much cheaper than certain people claim." Navka backed him up. "I'm an Olympic champion and I work a lot, including all summer," she told the tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda. "Before the wedding, I wondered what I could get the man I love. And I found a solution and I bought this great watch."

The article ridicules the figure skater's explanation, insinuating it was hastily contrived.
Who knows, though ? It seems to me that maybe Tatyana Navka did give it to him, but 15 months earlier, when Peskov was first observed sporting the trinket.
Likely, the Olympic medalist was trying to hide the date of the beginning of their relationship to avoid scandal for Peskov, whose wife left him after discovering his betrayal.

Nonetheless, we hear here shades of Putin's much-discussed Olympic gymnast friend, Alina Kabaeva, along with Patriarch Kirill's "No, not I, I would never own a Breguet.......Ummm.....I see. Yes, there is a reflection of a Breguet on the polished Danilov Monastery table top. Oh, you mean THAT ? Uh, ummm, I think I remember that it was given to me. [ Defensively ] Our "Motherland's" officials are often given substantial gifts. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with a Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia sporting such a dazzlingly costly timepiece. Do you hear ?"

Right after writing this, I opened a book I was rereading about St John Maximovitch to a page. There it was recounted in a memoir that St John was always late to Liturgy because he was busy visiting sick patients and tending to the needs of his suffering parishioners, all in forced exile from their homeland.

St John of Shanghai and San Francisco NEVER WORE A WATCH, the person happened to mention.

Isn't this quite a statement about the flurry of increasingly extravagant watch-acquiring by prominent figures today in Russia ?!
Why has this showy accoutrement become an emblem of "success", of "having arrived", almost a competition to see which man wears the most outrageously priced watch ?

Couldn't something tasteful but low-key become the new standard in timepieces worn by members of the Russian Federation, while the money put into Orthodox religious causes >?

Latest news in the semi-spicy department :

"Pro-Kremlin Russian state TV is airing an extravagant gymnastic festival honoring President Vladimir Putin’s rumored mistress Alina Kabaeva...

The bizarre “Alina Festival,” helmed by the Olympic champion, took place last month but premiered on the Russia-1 channel Wednesday to mark the International Day for the Protection of Children.

A TV promo advertising the over-the-top event showed hundreds of young gymnasts doing gravity-defying routines dressed in athletic gear harking back to Soviet times.

The jam-packed patriotic celebration also included an eccentric performance by a gaggle of school children wearing red scarfs reminiscent of young pioneers, standing in front of red banners.

Another equally surreal section of the festival featured a full military choir belting out a stirring rendition of a World War II-era song about a “holy patriotic war” while rhythmic gymnasts in sparkly red dresses gamboled across the stage.

Kabaeva, 39, acted as the MC of the athletic and musical extravaganza, appearing in a $1,700 pink floral wrap dress by Alessandra Rich.

This appears to be the second “Alina Festival” to be held in Moscow in as many months, reported Newsweek."

I could not recall on the 1st day back here how to edit that post, so here is the link for the above news article :

‘Alina Festival’: Putin criticised for honouring girlfriend Kabaeva amid Ukraine invasion

Much attention has been focused on the purported secret wife of Vladimir Putin. Up til this week, this curiosity primarily existed in the Russian Federation. There, supposedly knowledgeable sources assert that Alina has already had 4 children with the Russian leader, two 7 year old twin girls and 2 boys.
Thus, when sanctions were slapped on Putin's close family [ even his ex-wife Ludmilla and their 2 daughters ! ], observers were quick to note that Alina was sanctioned by both the UK and Canada.
Whereas, the US made an exception for the prominent media and political figure --- at least so far.
Alina is said to earn anywhere from 8 to 10 million dollars a year, though this could be speculation.

Here is the video of the recent "Alina" Festival if anyone is interested to analyze this unusual event.
Surely it was aimed to give viewers light entertainment and, at the same time, drum up support for the current war based on nostalgia for Soviet military successes of the past, such as in World War II.

Estimates of the number of children and whether girls or boys vary.
Here is an article from St Sergiy and German's Day this year from all places Indonesia :

It LOOKS like she is wearing a cross, though a more stylized one.

July 11 2022

JAKARTA - Happy news came from Olympic medal winner, Alina Kabaeva. The gymnast who is also the mistress of Russian President, Vladimir Putin, is reportedly pregnant with her third child.

A report from the Daily Star said the news was conveyed via a website filled with Kremlin insiders. However, this news actually made Putin unhappy.

The reason is, that the third child of Kabaeva is female. This made the 69-year-old grumble, "I've had enough of those kids, and I've had daughters long enough."

Kabaeva has long been reported to have a special relationship with the Russian president. However, the two are known to be very secretive about their relationship.
It is reported that Putin and Kabaeva already have two children. In 2015, reports claimed she gave birth to a son at a VIP clinic in Switzerland before having another child in Moscow four years later

Fact from online : "Kabaeva is one of the most decorated gymnasts in rhythmic gymnastic history, with 2 Olympic medals, 14 World Championship medals, and 21 European Championship medals"

Early this month, Alina Kabaeva was on the receiving end of US Treasury Dept sanctions. NPR is not a good source, but it was the best of the few American media outlet choices :

"The U.S. has brought sanctions against the former Olympic gymnast who is long-rumored to be the romantic partner of Russian President Vladimir Putin — adding the person known as "Russia's most flexible woman" to the growing list of individuals to face financial penalties in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Alina Kabaeva, 39, has been romantically linked to Putin, 69, for more than a decade and is thought to have had at least three children with him.
In announcing sanctions against her on Tuesday, the Treasury Department said "Kabaeva has a close relationship to Putin" and that she was being targeted as part of an effort to "impose severe costs for those who support President Vladimir Putin's war.".

The sanctions may not have much effect

"Kabaeva is just the latest individual in Putin's orbit to face sanctions in retaliation for the war in Ukraine. Since the launch of the Russian invasion in February, the U.S. has announced sanctions against a wide range of Russian banks and businesses, Putin associates and even two of his adult daughters.

But at this point in the war, it's unclear how far sanctions against any one individual will go to deter Putin, says Rachel Ziemba, an adjunct senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security. Ziemba says there's little to suggest Kabaeva even has financial assets in the U.S., and in the aftermath of similar sanctions against her by both the U.K. and European Union, she has likely "prepared for the risk" of penalty by the U.S.
"The idea is that by targeting people close to Putin himself, that it will make his life and those close to him more difficult, which might lead to them to sort of change policy," Ziemba said. "The ship has probably sailed on that one.""

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I have to say that this sanctions scheme seems a poor one. Apparently more public relations fireworks than a tactic with actual teeth.

Another more minor point is that every Western publication chose the ugliest pictures possible to publish of Alina Kabaeva. Instead of selecting more recent ones, which would be reasonable, the editors opted for extremely old images where Kabaeva looks like a mischievous teenager.

Through the reporting of US and EU sanctions on top Russian figures, one learns that Putin's ex-wife Ludmilla, also targeted as mentioned above, has remarried.

Her new last name is Ocheretnaya.
