In 1943 he was ordained to the Holy Priesthood by His Holiness, Patriarch KYRILL. The following year he graduated from the university. In 1947 he entered the University of Bern, Switzerland, where he studied theology until 1950, at which time he arrived in the US and was assigned Rector of Saint George Cathedral, Toledo, OH, and General Secretary of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in the USA and Canada. In 1964 he was consecrated to the episcopacy by His Eminence, Metropolitan Philaret of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia at Holy Trinity Monastery, Jordanville, NY.

Under Archbishop KYRILL’s leadership, the Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox Church petitioned His Beatitude, Metropolitan IRENEY for acceptance into the Orthodox Church in America, a request granted on December 20, 1976. In addition to overseeing the OCA’s Bulgarian Archdiocese, he was named Bishop of Pittsburgh. In 1992 the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America elevated him to the rank of Archbishop.
