I didn't know the part about Evgeny and his friends being killed for not becoming Muslims. They showed us the video in basic training. It was pretty gruesome. In any case, I'm just one of The Church, not The Church herself. Like you said, though we'll see

Actually regarding John Kanides, he was a faithful Orthodox Christian. To what the Greek New Calendar Metropolitan of Toronto Soterius said about him, is that they will Glorify John Kanides firstly along with the Innocent Children who suffered death in that School. He said that the sacrifice of John Kanides was outmost the highest sign of Christian Love. As for the innocent children, it is sure that all of them we're Orthodox Christians.

It would be unusual to hear, the Holy Innocents of Beslan, but you never know what God wants us to see.

Were they killed for being Orthodox or for being Russian?

were the Holy Martyrs of the Smyrna killed for Orthodoxy? Well, what reason was it that the Mongol Turks decided to do genocide on Christians. It affected all the Balkan lands to unite as Christian and defend their lands. Exaple: Greatmartyr Lazarus of Serbia Kosovo.
Now let analyse. Are these terrorists Orthodox? Of course not. They are Muslims from Chechnya, rebels and haters of all what is called Russian. But if you noticed, these terrorists such as Bassaiev hate the Russians for many reasons. Throughout history it was because they were a little different from the Chechens, faithwise and political wise.
Now when innocents are sacrificed until the end with a Christian ending, doesn't that make him a Passion bearer according to the Russian Church? Passion bearers are otherwords martyrs to the rest of non-Russian Christian Orthodoxy.
so of course, if this sacrifice was Christian, which it was. Sure, why not glorify these innocent people? God will decide.
