Powdered Cellulose (WOOD PULP) in foods!

Post by Maria »

Powdered Cellulose (ground up wood pulp from wood mills) is being added to foods as a filler.

A new report is calling attention to some disturbing findings concerning parmesan cheese products that have been sold at big chains like Target and Walmart.

Bloomberg Business reports that some cheese makers are using substitute ingredients and fillers, including wood pulp, in their products.

One such company, Castle Cheese Inc. of Pennsylvania, was found by the FDA to have used “no parmesan cheese" in the manufacturing of a product that was billed as being 100 percent grated parmesan.

And this has been used rather secretly even before 2011:

From the Wall Street Journal:

What is often in shredded cheese besides cheese?

Powdered cellulose: minuscule pieces of wood pulp or other plant fibers that coat the cheese and keep it from clumping by blocking out moisture.

One of an array of factory-made additives, cellulose is increasingly used by the processed-food industry, producers say.

You will also find powdered cellulose (powdered WOOD PULP) in almost vitamin and mineral supplements, almost all pharmaceuticals, grated cheese, processed foods, bran muffins, cookies, crackers, and even in spaghetti or pasta sauce. Read your labels carefully. I have found it in Trader Joes in their grated Parmesan Cheese and in their pasta sauce. In addition, manufacturers of food supplement make some (or all) of their veggie caps from powdered cellulose.

If you are using "enhanced fiber" to lose weight, be careful as powdered cellulose is not digestible and can cause digestive upsets. Remember, we are not termites.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

Here is another article:

Cellulose can by used as a supplement to bulk up foods with fake fiber. Next time you see “added fiber” on the label, take a look at the ingredients, it usually contains cellulose.
The gelling action of cellulose when combined with water creates an emulsion, suspending ingredients, making processed food products creamier and thicker than they would be otherwise.
Cellulose can absorb water and is used as an “anti-caking” agent in shredded and grated cheeses, spice mixes, and powdered drink mixes.
