There is certainly nothing derogatory in the term "Passion-bearers", and they are in no way "lesser" saints than holy martyrs. I remember that Met. Philaret would often refer to the Royal Martyrs as "Passion-bearers" in explaining their podvig, back in the years before the ROCOR glorified them, and when many within ROCOR still questioned the glorification. It is true, however, that the MP uses this term to underline what they see as a difference between them and "real" New-martyrs, who, they say, died directly because of their faith and not because of "politics", and therefore most True Orthodox in Russia now make a point of referring to the Royal Martyrs specifically as martyrs, rather than Passion-bearers.

Is this Met. Philaret that you mention the Saint Philaret?

There is a beautiful prayer giving great hope written by Met. Philaret in one of my prayerbook.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

I can answer that.
Yes, it is the same as ONE St Philaret, called, "of New York".
However, there were also St Philaret of Moscow and St Philaret of Kiev.

Seems to me that prayer to which you refer was composed by the former, who is quite a famous figure.
I have a picture of him hanging on the wall right behind me. I really like it.

[I have pictures of Met Philaret of New York right in front of me as I type
He is of course not YET as well known, having reposed only in 1985. Plus the MP is probably trying to
shut up the veneration of him, so knowledge of his stances against Sergianism, Communism etc. will
not proliferate in the former Soviet and East Bloc territories.

Thanks Barbara.

I will pose my question in the form of a multiple choice question.

Which St. Philaret wrote the prayer commonly found in prayerbooks?
A. St. Philaret of New York
B. St. Philaret of Moscow
C. St. Philaret of Kiev

I suspect that only the True Orthodox venerate St. Philaret of New York.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner.

Yes, your last sentence sums it up.

Choice : B !

St Philaret of Kiev did not write prolifically, as far as I know.
He was more pastoral, I think.

But one can buy the books written by St Philaret of Moscow everywhere in Russia ; they
are still popular.
It is HIS prayer, I am certain.

Not that St Philaret of New York did not compose. He was a music composer, in fact !
A little known point about him.
