Making the Sign of Cross the Orthodox Way

Post by Maria »

The image on the right shows the correct way to make the Orthodox Sign of the Cross.

We touch our heads to honor the Father, then we touch our stomach to honor the Son who fills us with His Body and Blood. Finally we touch our right shoulder and cross our chest to reach our left shoulder.

When the Sign of the Cross is made in this manner, then we have made the True Cross.

On the contrary, Roman Catholics and Anglicans make the Sign of the Cross as depicted on the left in such a way to form an upside down cross.

One should not be showy and draw attention to one's self when making the sign of the cross. Neither should one be hurried and careless. Be diligent and attentive to making the sign. It should not be an afterthought. Make the sign of the cross with all sobriety, dignity and seriousness.
