Do you have some examples of how the book is contrary to real experience and based on western secularism?

Philoteus, you'll have to do better than that. If you really want Ephrem to learn the truth as you see it, you're going to have to give more evidence than just your personal opinion. You are not God, so why should we assume you know the language of God?

Good for you Ephrem. You are on your way to learning the
Language of God by praying. I will pray for you.

Sincerely,
Philoteus

Getting back to the book. I was impressed by the explanations of the stages and the spiritual and psychological experiences that a person goes through. Read the book and then try to tell me that you have never experienced any of the examples he explained. If anything, this is a summarization of all the teachings of the holy fathers. St. Theophan the Recluse explained our spiritual struggles.

But, I'm confused about the argument between Philoteus and Ephrem. What are you two arguing about?

This is my thread, so I'll be happy to explain it to you.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. (Ps. 50)

I have read the book quoted in the OP several times.

It was excellent. Thanks for starting this thread, joasia.

Stay away from books like this. As I quote from Father Seraphim Rose: His Life and Works on page 473;

"It was his selfless love for Truth that set him apart from those who would reinterpret the teaching of the Fathers according to
modern CONCEPTIONS."

Father Rose read directly from the writings of the Holy Fathers and he is a sure guide in today's world. He understood the times we live in.
