Re: Holy Hierarch Averky [Taushev] of Jordanville

Amplifying the second to last sentence above, it took courage for Archbishop Averky [Taushev] to stand up for St John. For a fact never mentioned in the general accounts of this tragic situation of St John's being to appear in a secular court [ ! ] is that there were actually 2 sides present in the courtroom :

"The opponents of Vladyka John summoned his enemies among the bishops to the trial: Archbishops Nicon (Rklitsky), Anthony (Sinkevich) of Los Angeles, Vitaly (Ustinov) of Canada and Seraphim (Ivanov) of Chicago. On the opposing bench with Archbishop John were Archbishops Averky and Leonty, and Bishops Savva and Nektary."

Imagine that powerful lineup of senior Rocor Archbishops, including the future Metropolitan Vitaly ! It took a special courage for the more meager group of 2 Archbishops and 2 Bishops to confront them in that sizzling setting of a modern courtroom.

When the newly elected Metropolitan Philaret seemed to side against the supporters of St John Maximovitch, called the Society of Laymen, Archbishop Averky's vigorous complaints were subdued, likely out of obedience and respect for the 1st Hierarch of Rocor.

"In his first speech at metropolitan at the Council, the holy hierarch Philaret declared as regards the activity of the ‘laymen’ : ‘They will not frighten us,’ quoting Stolypin. After this the ‘laymen’ and their supporters among the hierarchs, in particular Archbishop Averky of Syracuse and Archbishop Leonty of Chile, were quiet for a time, but then their activity was renewed."

How so ? Abp Averky wrote on the Feast of the Exaltation of The Cross, 1966, to the newly instated Metropolitan Philaret of Blessed Memory with the following dire warning, again demonstrating the courage to speak out in favor of the righteous St John and against his opponents :
“A tendency has appeared among a small group of bishops to create ‘its own party’ and strive for all power in the Church. Scandals have begun among us which, alas, are leading our Church to destruction, all the while broadening and deepening their activity from that time until now.”

Later, on April 21, 1967, the Archbishop of Syracuse and Holy Trinity more emphatically wrote to Metropolitan Philaret :

“I am inexpressibly sorry for you, Holy Vladyko, that you are being so skilfully and cunningly cajoled by dishonourable people who have clearly lost their conscience, if they are able so disgustingly and horribly to slander others who see them and know them and whom they for that reason fear. After all, besides a small bunch of personal friends and relatives, who are also bound to each other by a commonality of interests of the same base character, absolutely nobody supports them. The true Church people is not with them, for it sees and knows them thoroughly and does not believe them. By slandering others, they think they can in this way whitewash themselves… Everything would be peaceful, quiet and friendly with us in the Church if it were not for the striving of this bunch to seize dictatorial power into their own hands”

For those who are curious to get a real life sense of this well-respected Rocor hierarch, 2 videos which include historic footage of Archbishop Averky by the Orthodox youtube channel "Gregory Decapolite" are below.

This one recounts the dream of fr Seraphim Rose as written up in an issue of Orthodox Word magazine. I won't make any comment about the dream, but the clips of Archbishop Averky sprinkling holy water, walking around Jordanville, etc. are a great way to see the hierarch himself in action :

The 2nd video shows some of the same scenes of Archbishop Averky, probably taken with a 1970s - era movie camera. It then offers a written sermon by the Rocor prelate on one of his oft-discussed topics accompanied by soothing Russian chant :

I was reading up - a little, for I am not much interested in this prelate - Abp Theophan of Poltava and saw the surprising news that the young layman Alexander Taushev was the cell attendant of Abp Theophan.

Thus, all three hierarchs and future hierarchs who had some interaction with Rocor during their careers were in Bulgaria at the same time : Abp Feofan, Bishop Seraphim [Sobolev], who appears to have been the Vicar of Feofan for awhile until Feofan's mysterious escape to Paris ; and the soon-to-be Fr Averky [Taushev].
