SanRemo Church may lock doors until diocesan assembly

Post by Barbara »

Much in Church news of the past few days is the historic jewel of San Remo, Italy, the Church of the Savior, St Seraphim and St Catherine's vote to join Rocor-MP, where it was accepted, most likely with delight. This article, by an Italian, does not include mention of Rocor-MP, which the author omits entirely to include as the most important of the jurisdictions which lasted through the post-Russian revolutionary years in Europe. Somehow, he understands only the EP and the Paris Exarchate as active in Europe among the emigres from the Russian Empire.
Otherwise, this article provides a backdrop for those readers not so well versed in this tricky struggle taking place today.

Rome (AsiaNews) - The Patriarchate of Constantinople has suspended a divinis father Dionisij Bajkov (see photo) for three months. The Orthodox priest was serving in San Remo at the historic church dedicated to the Most Holy Savior, Saint Katherine and Saint Seraphim of Sarov. It is one of the churches of the Russian archdiocese that was suppressed last November by the ecumenical patriarchate, who were told to stop commemorating their Archbishop, to join the clergy of the Greek metropolises, to consider the parishes and communities as part of these metropolises , and finally to deliver all the required documents and parish registers.

The suspension was decided by Metropolitan Gennadios (Zervos), head of the Greek Orthodox in Italy, based in Venice. Father Bajkov ignored his directives, and continued to commemorate the Archbishop of Paris Ioannis of Chariopoulis, born Jean Renneteau, a 76-year-old Frenchman born in Bordeaux, who represents the historic "French orthodoxy" originating from the Russian emigration of the following years to the revolution. Furthermore, the parish priest of San Remo did not attend the meeting convened in Venice on 23 January. Like him, other priests in Italy also deserted the convocation to Venice, and further suspensions and threats are expected for days.

The church of San Remo is perhaps the most famous among the Italian Orthodox churches; as Father Dionisij himself reiterated in an interview with Nezavisimaja Gazeta, "is the city's visiting card, and is shown on all tourist maps, which is why it has long been targeted by the Greeks. To avoid controversy, we will keep it closed until February 23rd, when there will be the assembly of our Archdiocese ". The parish priest also added that he is ready, if necessary, to "lock the doors". Other priests, 10 in total, that make up the exarchate of Paris, have decided to abstain for the next month from all the liturgical celebrations....

The European Russians, in fact, have tried in this century to keep the Russian identity, which seemed to have been canceled by the Soviets at home, intact.

I was searching for the material I had earlier dug up on Tsarina Marie Alexandrovna and her connection with this pretty Church in San Remo. A picture of photogenic Church caught my eyes several years ago, and the connection with the Russian Royal Family made the subject even more intriguing.

More information forthcoming

Clarification from the Chancellor of Rocor-MP about what precisely that assembly was, and the historical background of the EP's endless flipflop vis a vis the Paris Exarchate follows below.

[ As for Metropolitan Evlogy, words can not convey how much trouble he caused in the ecclesiastical life of the Russian emigration by his selfish actions in breaking with the early Rocor, and by his own subsequent jurisdictional flipflops. ]

"Both the rector and parishioners of this church humbly and with reliance on the will of God anticipated a broad assembly of clergymen and laity which on February 23, 2019, which was scheduled to decide the matter of the future path of the Archdiocese of the Russian Orthodox Churches in Western Europe. However, the head of the Italian Metropoliate of the Constantinople Patriarchate began to pressure the Orthodox Christians of San Remo, demanding that they cease commemorating their own Archbishop John of Charioupolis and accept the decision of the Phanar of the dissolution of the Archdiocese and enter into his diocese. Priest Dionysy Baikov, Rector of the parish, was also suspended by him from clerical service. So when the rector and parishioners appealed to His Grace Bishop Irenei, who, having heard their complaint, was moved to sympathy and received them into his diocese, so that the ecclesiastical life of the oppressed would not be disrupted.

We understand that the Archdiocese faces difficult questions: to accept the decisions of the Holy Synod in Istanbul on the dissolution of the Russian Archdiocese? Should it merge with the dioceses of the Constantinople Patriarchate or other jurisdictions in Western Europe, or preserve its unity, its persona and its traditions, and jointly seek out a safe haven in another Orthodox Church? Naturally, no one wishes to meddle in the peaceful resolution of these questions and we pray for the fulfillment of Divine Will, yet the parish in San Remo was persecuted not within the Archdiocese, but by the local representatives of the Constantinople Patriarchate. That is why the parish was forced to expeditiously take a decision on its future.

The Archdiocese of Russian Orthodox Churches in Western Europe came into existence in 1931 as a result of differences between Metropolitan Evlogy (Georgievsky) and the hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia headed by Metropolitan Anthony (Khrapovitsky) of Kiev and Galicia, who had exerted every effort to preserve the unity of the Russian Church in the diaspora.

Upon its establishment, the provisional nature of these parishes being part of the Constantinople Patriarchate was emphasized, which was reflected in its name: “The Temporary Exarchate of the Holy, Apostolic and Patriarchal Throne of Constantinople in Western Europe.”

In the mid-1940’s, before the repose of Metropolitan Evlogy, the Exarchate transferred to the Moscow Patriarchate, but under Metropolitan Vladimir, the successor to Metropolitan Evlogy, it returned to Constantinople’s jurisdiction.

In 1965, the Phanar abandoned the Exarchate, instructing it to return to the Moscow Patriarchate, but then restored its jurisdiction over it in 1971, restructuring it into an archdiocese and subjecting it to its Metropoliate of Gaul. In 1999, by ukase of Patriarch Bartholomew."
