They kneel and push forward. I tell them that my hand will gently push them until they are immersed, then I let go and they can come back up.

The birthing pool gives me no problems, as long as you fill it to the line indicated. I haven't had it overflow yet either. I'm not saying it's the only way, just that I am very pleased with it.

Yes, birthing pools are not the cheapest option, however they have several advantages: they are completely functional for full immersion, afterward they are easily cleaned, they can be stored easier than other options, and they are very robust. To me, there are no excuses for improper baptism, outside of an emergency. I use an inflatable birth pool. I can have it blown up, and full of water in 30 minutes!
