Re: The question of Grace: Matthewites vs. Kallinikites

I agree with you about there not being such disagreement over conciliar authority before. When a local council wanted to anathematize something, it just did so authoritatively, never cautioning the audience that its decisions are only provisional, even if later the decisions were overturned. But isn...

Re: The question of Grace: Matthewites vs. Kallinikites

I guess one way to put it is that to make a definite statement about whether or not the ecumenists have grace, one must also make a definitive statement about when grace is lost among heretics, i.e. at the time the council issues its statements. It seems to be the case that, despite statements by my...

Re: On John (Maximovitch) of San Francisco and the ROCOR

Regarding St John's supposed ignorance that concelebration with the new calendarists was going on, up until 1966, ROCOR was in official communion with the EP and other new calendar churches and concelebrations occurred regularly, and not just with Abp Anthony. The first hierarch Met Anastasy partici...

Re: The question of Grace: Matthewites vs. Kallinikites

Yes, they did renounce those beliefs. Some like to point to a statement by retired Met Chrysostomos of Etna saying that he "renounced nothing" but in fact what he said was that "none of our principles have been set aside", which is not the same thing as saying that he has not ren...

Re: Bp Auxentios GOC-K: 1-19-2015 OS - Debate

Cyprian, you keep insisting that the question of whether the new calendarists had grace was a "crucial matter" on which Bp Matthew was justified in creating a schism. I simply disagree: it was not crucial to insist categorically on whether or not the new calendarists had grace, but rather ...

Re: Bp Auxentios GOC-K: 1-19-2015 OS - Debate

I agree that it is highly unlikely the World Orthodox will ever return en masse to the GOC, but that would not be the only goal of convening a Major Synod. Another purpose would be to persuade individual WO members who might be more convinced if not only the Greeks, but the Russian, Serbian, Romania...

Re: On John (Maximovitch) of San Francisco and the ROCOR

Maria, what do you mean the SiR schismed from the GOC in 1994? Metropolitan Cyprian was deposed by the GOC-Chrysostomos synod in 1986, I'm pretty sure. But thanks for the correction on the date of St John's repose: I thought it was 1963, not 1966. Anyway, you are not going to succeed in demonstratin...
